TODAY’S BIRTHDAY: HULDRYCH ZWINGLI (1484)

Huldrych Zwingli (1484)

Zwingli was a Swiss theologian who championed the Reformation in Switzerland. Inspired by his studies rather than a crisis of faith, he challenged the ritualism, decadence, and hierarchy of the Catholic Church, and his stance on the sacrament of communion brought him into conflict with both Martin Luther and the Church. After a Zurich council approved many of his proposals, organs were destroyed, priests were allowed to wed, and the liturgy was simplified. In what 1531 battle was Zwingli killed? More…Discuss

THIS DAY IN THE YESTERYEAR: THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION IS FORMALLY ISSUED (1863)

The Emancipation Proclamation Is Formally Issued (1863)

Though this edict, issued by US President Abraham Lincoln while the country was embroiled in a bloody civil war, was largely a symbolic gesture and did not actually end slavery, it was a major step on the road to abolition and sent a clear message about the Union’s stance on the matter. The proclamation—which was almost entirely the work of Lincoln himself—declared free all slaves living in areas still engaged in revolt against the Union. nEWS: US CHICKEN CONTAMINATION WIDESPREAD

US Chicken Contamination Widespread

A recent study found that almost all of the raw chicken breast in the US is contaminated with potentially harmful bacteria and about half carries a “superbug,” that is, a bacterium resistant to multip le antibiotics. The findings bolster calls for curbing the use of these drugs in livestock. Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration announced a plan to cut the non-medical use ofantib iotics in livestock over the next three years. Some consumer groups feel that the plan does not go far enough and are calling on the American government to pass stricter legislation regulating antibiotics on farms.More… Discuss

“Le Plat Pays” Mr Jacques Brel – 1962

Jacques Brel
“LE PLAT PAYS”
1962

On Christmas day 800 the Frankish king Charlemagne was crowned emperor by the pope in Rome. Charlemagne was not only a great political and military leader, but also a scholar and patron of the arts who invited the most learned men of the day to his court. Some particularly lavish books were produced in the Carolingian period—this image shows a jewelled ‘treasure’ binding surviving on a manuscript written at Tours probably in the 820s. Very few medieval manuscripts still have their original bindings, although it is clear from accounts in saints’ lives and other literature that illuminated books were often given valuable covers. This example contains the bones of saints set within its wooden binding boards, making it also a reliquary. Part of its decoration was reconstructed in the nineteenth century.

Mozart – Quintet for Piano and Winds in E flat, K. 452

The Quintet in E flat major for Piano and Winds, K. 452, was completed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on March 30, 1784 and premiered two days later at the Imperial and Royal National Court Theater in Vienna. Shortly after the premiere, Mozart wrote to his father that “I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.” It is scored for piano, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon. There are three movements:
1. Largo – Allegro moderato
2. Larghetto
3. Allegretto
This structure closely resembles that of a typical sonata. The first movement is a sprightly sonata form Allegro, with themes being passed from instrument to instrument, usually with the piano introducing a theme and accompanying while the oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon play variations on it. The Larghetto movement is typical of the 2nd movement of other Mozart pieces: soft and gentle, yet still engaging. The Allegretto movement is a “sonata-rondo” of the kind Mozart used as the finale of many of the piano concertos he was writing at this period, and contains a written-out cadenza-like section toward the end.
This piece was the inspiration for the Quintet in E flat for Piano and Winds, Op. 16, by Ludwig van Beethoven, who composed this tribute in 1796. Both compositions use the same scoring.

Symphony no.3 in E flat major was premiered by Bedřich Smetana in 1874. It was a great moment for young Dvořák, because it was his first big score played in public. You can heard in this symphony typical dvořák’s melodies but also some inspiration from Liszt or Wagner (work with motives, harmonies).

Queen Victoria Chooses to Make Ottawa, Ontario, Canada’s Capital (1857)

First inhabited by indigenous tribes, the city that became Ottawa was founded as Bytown in 1827 by John By, an engineer in charge of construction of the Rideau Canal linking Lake Ontario and the Ottawa River. In the 1850s, the city was renamed Ottawa—after the Algonquian-speaking Ottawa tribe—when it fell into competition with major cities like Montreal and Toronto to be named capital of the Province of Canada, which comprised modern-day Ontario and Quebec. Yellowstone Supervolcano More than Twice as Large as Previously Thought

The supervolcano that sits beneath America‘sYellowstone National Park and fuels such geothermal wonders as Old Faithful and Mammoth Hot Springs is two and a half times larger than previously estimated. Scientists mapped the magma chamber underneath the Yellowstone caldera by analyzing seismic data and determined that it is 55 miles (88.5 km) long, 18 miles (29 km) wide, and contains 48 to 144 cubic miles (200 to 600 cubic km) of molten rock. If it were to erupt, the damage would be catastrophic and the effects felt worldwide. The supervolcano has erupted just three times in the past 2.1 million years. An Old English translation was added in the ninth century above the Latin text; this addition is the oldest extant translation into English of any biblical text. This copy was made in Kent in the first half of the eighth century, perhaps at Canterbury. As in the Lindisfarne Gospels, the frame around the picture incorporates spirals of Celtic origin. One actor tried calming the audience, but panic spread. Many escape routes were unmarked, and a stampede ensued. As people fled, the cold air they let in fed the inferno. Don’t Worry, This Won’t Hurt a Bit

It is natural to want to reassure children during medical procedures, but it may be better to refrain from doing so. A study of children’s anxiety during dental visitssuggests that placating words from nurses actually raise their stress levels rather than lowering them. Comments like “Don’t worry; it won’t hurt” or “It’s not going to last much longer” distress children by drawing attention to the negative aspects of the treatment. Kids seem to do better when they receive praise instead. For example, if a child opens his or her mouth, the nurse could say, “Well done for opening your mouth wide!” More…Discuss

I said to Hank Williams: “How lonely does it get?”
Hank Williams hasn’t answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
Oh, a hundred floors above me in the Tower of Song

I was born like this, I had no choice
I was born with the gift of a golden voice
And twenty-seven angels from the Great Beyond
They tied me to this table right here in the Tower of Song

So you can stick your little pins in that voodoo doll
I’m very sorry, baby, it doesn’t look like me at all
I’m standin’ by the window where the light is strong
Ah, they don’t let a woman kill you, not in the Tower of Song

Now, you can say that I’ve grown bitter but of this you may be sure:
The rich have got their channels in the bedrooms of the poor
And there’s a mighty Judgement comin’ but I may be wrong
You see, I hear these funny voices in the Tower of Song

I see you standin’ on the other side
I don’t know how the river got so wide
I loved you, baby, way back when…
And all the bridges are burnin’ that we might’ve crossed
But I feel so close to everything that we lost
We’ll never, we’ll never have to lose it again

Now, I bid you farewell, I don’t know when I’ll be back
They’re movin’ us tomorrow to the tower down the track
But you’ll be hearin’ from me, baby, long after I’m gone
I’ll be speakin’ to you sweetly from a window in the Tower of Song.

Yeah, my friends are gone and my hair is grey
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I’m crazy for love but I’m not comin’ on
I’m just payin’ my rent everyday in the Tower of Song
