Wishmaster (1997) – Fear the Djinn

“Once, in a time before time, God breathed life into the universe. And the light gave birth to Angels. And the earth gave birth to Man. And the fire gave birth to the Djinn, creatures condemned to dwell in the void between the worlds. One who wakes a Djinn shall be given three wishes. Upon the granting of the third, the unholy legions of the Djinn shall be freed to rule the earth. Fear one thing in all there is…fear the Djinn.” (From Wishmaster)

Ther Dreamers: (“People Have the Power” – Patti Smith)

Bernardo Bertolucci‘s film of love, romance, revolution and cinema. Starring Eva Green, Louis Garrel and Michael Pitt.

The song for this tribute video is “People Have The Power” by Patti Smith and following are the lyrics:

I was dreaming in my dreaming

Of an aspect bright and fair
And my sleeping it was broken
But my dream it lingered near
In the form of shining valleys
Where the pure air recognized
And my senses newly opened
I awakened to the cry
That the people / have the power
To redeem / the work of fools
Upon the meek / the graces shower
It’s decreed / the people rule

The people have the power
The people have the power
The people have the power
The people have the power
[ Lyrics from: Vengeful aspects became suspect
And bending low as if to hear
And the armies ceased advancing
Because the people had their ear
And the shepherds and the soldiers
Lay beneath the stars
Exchanging visions
And laying arms
To waste / in the dust
In the form of / shining valleys
Where the pure air / recognized
And my senses / newly opened
I awakened / to the cry

Refrain

Where there were deserts
I saw fountains
Like cream the waters rise
And we strolled there together
With none to laugh or criticize
And the leopard
And the lamb
Lay together truly bound
I was hoping in my hoping
To recall what I had found
I was dreaming in my dreaming
God knows / a purer view
As I surrender to my sleeping
I commit my dream to you

Refrain

The power to dream / to rule
To wrestle the world from fools
It’s decreed the people rule
It’s decreed the people rule
Listen
I believe everything we dream
Can come to pass through our union
We can turn the world around
We can turn the earth’s revolution
We have the power
People have the power …

Michael Moore Stands with Occupy Oakland at Oscar Grant Plaza (10/28/11)

“Not being here and watching from afar what took place here was really horrifying — to see this, in this country. … I think all of us want to send our best wishes, our prayers, our good karma, everything that we can muster to Scott so that he is better and well. … Let’s have 30 seconds of silence in honor of Scott Olsen and our hope that he will recover quickly from his injuries.” — Michael Moore at Occupy Oakland, Friday, October 28th, 2011

When we wish for change it is wise to wise to be able to articulate exactly what we’re expecting to receive. So be careful not only what you’re wishing for, but more importantly of whom (I mean: Fear the Djin!). Otherwise, don’t make any wish!

Quan Apologizes To ‘Occupy Oakland’ For Violence In Statement

Two days after authorizing the use of force against protesters at the “Occupy Oakland” camp, Mayor Jean Quan issued a statement apologizing for the violence. Robert Lyles reports.

via Quan Apologizes To ‘Occupy Oakland’ For Violence In Statement.

I am glad that Scott is better and hope that he will not have  permanent and debilitating neurological damage, requiring a lifetime of daily treatment.

“Traumatic brain injury (TBI), also known as intracranial injury, occurs when an external force traumatically injures the brain. TBI can be classified based on severity, mechanism (closed or penetrating head injury), or other features (e.g. occurring in a specific location or over a widespread area). Head injury usually refers to TBI, but is a broader category because it can involve damage to structures other than the brain, such as the scalp and skull.

TBI is a major cause of death and disability worldwide, especially in children and young adults. Causes include falls, vehicle accidents, and violence…”

Today’s Birthday: Tokugawa Yoshinobu (1837)

Tokugawa Yoshinobu (1837)

Tokugawa was the 15th and last shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan. The Tokugawa family held the shogunate and controlled Japan from 1603 to 1867. Beginning at the time of Yoshinobu’s birth, there were numerous peasant uprisings and samurai unrest. Undermined by increasing foreign incursions, the Tokugawa were overthrown by an attack of provincial forces from Choshu, Satsuma, and Tosa, who restored the Meiji emperor to power. Yoshinobu resigned in 1867. How did he spend his retirement? More… Discuss

Quotation of the Day: Francis Bacon – How to Paradise (on Paradise Lost)

The desire of power in excess caused the angels to fall; the desire of knowledge in excess caused man to fall.

Francis Bacon (1561-1626) Discuss

My take on this: The Garden of Eden might have been a place of bliss (ignorant of Power and Knowledge.) What good are they both if they displace you from your natural place: The fruits of power and knowledge are deemed to fall out of grace and loose it.

This Day in History: Statue of Liberty Is Dedicated (1886)

Statue of Liberty Is Dedicated (1886)

The Statue of Liberty, originally known as Liberty Enlightening the World, was proposed by French historian Édouard Laboulaye in 1865 to commemorate the alliance of France with the American colonies during the American Revolution. Designed by French sculptor F. A. Bartholdi, the statue is 152 ft (46 m) high and is possibly the tallest metal statue ever made. It was shipped to New York in 1885, assembled, and dedicated in 1886. What New York tradition originated during the dedication? More… Discuss

Oakland Police Raid on Occupy Oakland Raises Serious Questions

Oakland Police Raid on Occupy Oakland Raises Serious Questions ( from ACLU) Click here to read the article at ACLU)

From ACLU:
The ACLU of Northern California and the National Lawyers’ Guild demanded a full investigation of Tuesday’s events. The groups also asked OPD to immediately produce records about the use of force in responding to the early morning raid of the Occupy Oakland encampment and the evening demonstration. The public has a right to transparency and accountability, and yesterday’s events are no exception. The ACLU-NC is also urging people to email the Oakland Police Department calling for transparency and an end to excessive use of force.

Reports of OPD’s conduct raise serious questions about whether it violated its own policy on dealing with demonstrations.

Michael Moore: “We live in a liberal country … You know who believes it — and they’re proving that they believe it — are the Republicans. Because why would you try to suppress the vote if you believed you lived in a Conservative country? If you believed you lived in a Republican country, the last thing you would do would be to make it hard for people to vote. You’d be setting up voting booths in every Wal-Mart across the country.” — Michael Moore, Monday, October 24th, White Plains, New York

‘US of Europe total disgrace, collapsing as we speak’: This Was Yesterday

The British Parliament has voted overwhelmingly against holding a referendum on leaving the European Union. A petition of over 100 thousand signatures from the public had called for the debate. The government earlier ordered its MPs to vote against the motion – or face penalties. Despite this, dozens of David Cameron’s party members defied the order, in what’s been the biggest internal challenge he’s faced as Prime Minister. But Jon Gaunt, from the ‘Vote UK out of the EU’ campaign, says Britain never signed up for what the EU turned out to be.

Tear gas used by the Oakland police against protesters at Occupy Oakland, California (From NYTIMES)

Tear gas, formally known as a lachrymatory agent or lachrymator (from lacrima meaning “a tear” in Latin), is a non-lethal chemical weapon that stimulates the corneal nerves in the eyes to cause tearing, pain, and even blindness. Common lachrymators include OC, CS, CR, CN, nonivamide, bromoacetone, phenacyl bromide, xylyl bromide and syn-propanethial-S-oxide (from onions). Lacrymators often share the structural element Z=C-C-X, where Z indicates carbon or oxygen, and X indicates bromide or chloride.

Antidote

Because tear gas is not actually a gas but a very fine acid powder, its effectiveness can be easily mitigated by any over the counter anti acid drug commonly available at drugstores or pharmacy without prescription, like Sodium bicarbonate, Maalox or Alka-Seltzer to name a few.[1][2]

Other use

Although lachrymatory agents are commonly used as riot control weapons, the most common use of some is in laboratory synthesis, where their lachrymatory properties are an undesirable side effect. Common examples include benzyl chloride, thionyl chloride, and acetic anhydride
