Johnny Cash – The beast in me
Johnny Cash – “The Beast In Me” :
The beast in me
Is caged by frail and fragile bars
Restless by day
And by night rants and rages at the stars
God help the beast in me
The beast in me
Has had to learn to live with pain
And how to shelter from the rain
And in the twinkling of an eye
Might have to be restrained
God help the beast in me
Sometimes it tries to kid me
That it’s just a teddy bear
And even somehow manage to vanish in the air
And that is when I must beware
Of the beast in me that everybody knows
They’ve seen him out dressed in my clothes
Patently unclear
If it’s New York or New Year
God help the beast in me
The beast in me
Kris Kristofferson – Sunday Morning Coming Down (The Memorial Tribute Concert (2003)-Johnny Cash)
Kris Kristofferson – Sunday Morning Coming Down
Lyrics:
Well I woke up Sunday morning,
With no way to hold my head that didn’t hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn’t bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes,
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
An’ I shaved my face and combed my hair,
An’ stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.
I’d smoked my brain the night before,
On cigarettes and songs I’d been pickin’.
But I lit my first and watched a small kid,
Cussin’ at a can that he was kicking.
Then I crossed the empty street,
‘n caught the Sunday smell of someone fryin’ chicken.
And it took me back to somethin’,
That I’d lost somehow, somewhere along the way.
On the Sunday morning sidewalk,
Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
‘Cos there’s something in a Sunday,
Makes a body feel alone.
And there’s nothin’ short of dyin’,
Half as lonesome as the sound,
On the sleepin’ city sidewalks:
Sunday mornin’ comin’ down.
In the park I saw a daddy,
With a laughin’ little girl who he was swingin’.
And I stopped beside a Sunday school,
And listened to the song they were singin’.
Then I headed back for home,
And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin’.
And it echoed through the canyons,
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.
On the Sunday morning sidewalk,
Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
‘Cos there’s something in a Sunday,
Makes a body feel alone.
And there’s nothin’ short of dyin’,
Half as lonesome as the sound,
On the sleepin’ city sidewalks:
Sunday mornin’ comin’ down.

Today’s Birthday: WILLIE NELSON (1933)
Willie Nelson (1933)
Nelson is an American musician who helped create the blues-rock-country genre known as “outlaw music.” In his five-decade career, he has made more than 200 recordings. In the 1960s, he became a successful songwriter in Nashville but was not recognized for his own singing until he moved back to Texas and adopted the unique image that made him an icon. He is known for raising money to aid farmers and for his generous appearances at benefit concerts. What hit song did he write for Patsy Cline? More… Discuss

Ricky Nelson – Travelin’ Man 1961
Lyrics:
I’m a travelin’ man
and I’ve made a lotta stops
all over the world
And in every port
I own the heart of at least one lovely girl
I’ve a pretty senorita
waitin’ for me down in old Mexico
And if you’re ever in Alaska
stop and see my cute little Eskimo
Oh my sweet fräulien
down in Berlin town
makes my heart start to yearn
And my China doll
down in old Hong Kong
waits for my return
Pretty Polynesian baby over the sea
I remember the night
When we walked in the sands of Waikiki
and I held you oh so tight
Oh, I’m a travelin’ man
Yes, I’m a travelin’ man
Yes, I’m a travelin’ man
Woe, I’m a travelin’ man

According to Wikipedia: “The song was written by Don Raye and Hughie Prince, and was recorded at Decca‘s Hollywood studios on January 2, 1941, nearly a year before theUnited States entered World War II but after the start of a peacetime draft to expand the armed forces in anticipation of American involvement. The flipside was “Bounce Me Brother With a Solid Four”. The Andrews Sisters introduced the song in the 1941 Abbott and Costello film Buck Privates, which was in production when they made the record. “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song.
It is closely based on an earlier Raye-Prince hit, “Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar,” which is about a virtuoso boogie-woogie piano player”

Casey Jones Dies on the Cannonball Express(1900)
Jones was an American locomotive engineer whose main claim to fame, until his fateful run on the Cannonball Express, was his punctuality. On April 30, 1900, he was driving the Cannonball Express south on a dangerous, accident-prone run when he suddenly saw a stalled freight train ahead. Instead of jumping to safety, he stayed to slow his train, saving his coworkers and passengers but losing his own life in the process. Who wrote the ballad that immortalized him as a folk hero? EVIDENCE OF ANCIENT TSUNAMI IN NORTHERN GREECE
Evidence of Ancient Tsunami in Northern Greece
Geologists say that they have found evidence to support the ancient Greek historian Herodotus’s account of a tsunami that saved a Greek village from Persian invaders in 479 BCE. In his account, Herodotus states that “a great flood-tide of the sea” killed hundreds of Persian soldiers who had besieged the city of Potidaea. He also indicates that many smaller tsunamis had struck there in the past. Sediment in the area where Potidaea once stood shows signs of massive marine events, and excavations of a nearby city have uncoveredseashells that were likely deposited there by a tsunami. CYRANO DE BERGERAC
Cyrano de Bergerac
Cyrano de Bergerac is an 1897 play by Edmond Rostand whose title character was inspired by a 17th-century writer with an exceptionally large nose. Rostand’s play, written entirely in rhymed couplets, relates the tale of Cyrano, a soldier and poet, who falls in love with the beautiful Roxane. Rather than woo Roxane himself, the large-nosed Cyrano provides his handsome friend, Christian, with the dialogue to win her heart. What word did this play introduce into the English language? Oldsmobile Builds Its Last Car (2004)
Founded in 1897 by Ransom Olds, Oldsmobile—not Ford—was the first company to mass produce automobiles. After it became part of General Motors in 1908, it shifted to making luxury vehicles. Sales soared in the 1970s and 80s—the Cutlass was the top-selling car in America in 1976—but by the 90s, Oldsmobile had lost its market to other GM divisions. Amid declining profitability, GM discontinued the line in 2004 after 107 years. The first Oldsmobile was the Curved Dash. What was the last? More… Discuss

Regina Spektor – Ghost of Corporate Future – Live at O2 Shepherds Bush Empire
The ghost of Corporate Future
(song by Regina Spektor)
A man walks out of his apartment,
It is raining, he’s got no umbrella
He starts running beneath the awnings,
Trying to save his suit,
Trying to save his suit.
Trying to dry, and to dry, and to dry but no good
It is raining, he’s got no umbrella
He starts running beneath the awnings,
Trying to save his suit,
Trying to save his suit.
Trying to dry, and to dry, and to dry but no good
When he gets to the crowded subway platform,
He takes off both of his shoes
He steps right into somebody’s fat loogie
And everyone who sees him says, “Ew.”
Everyone who sees him says, “Ew.”
But he doesn’t care,
‘Cause last night he got a visit from the
Ghost of Corporate Future
The ghost said, “Take off both your shoes
Whatever chances you get
Especially when they’re wet.”
He also said,
“Imagine you go away
On a business trip one day
And when you come back home,
Your children have grown
And you never made your wife moan,
Your children have grown
And you never made your wife moan.”
“And people make you nervous
You’d think the world is ending,
And everybody’s features have somehow started blending
And everything is plastic,
And everyone’s sarcastic,
And all your food is frozen,
It needs to be defrosted.”
“You’d think the world was ending,
You’d think the world was ending,
You’d think the world was ending right now.
You’d think the world was ending,
You’d think the world was ending,
You’d think the world was ending right now.”
“Well maybe you should just drink a lot less coffee,
And never ever watch the ten o’clock news,
Maybe you should kiss someone nice,
Or lick a rock,
Or both.”
“Maybe you should cut your own hair
‘Cause that can be so funny
It doesn’t cost any money
And it always grows back
Hair grows even after you’re dead”
“And people are just people,
They shouldn’t make you nervous.
The world is everlasting,
It’s coming and it’s going.
If you don’t toss your plastic,
The streets won’t be so plastic.
And if you kiss somebody,
Then both of you’ll get practice.”
“The world is everlasting
Put dirtballs in your pocket,
Put dirtballs in your pocket,
And take off both your shoes.
‘Cause people are just people,
People are just people,
People are just people like you.
People are just people,
People are just people,
People are just people like you.”
The world is everlasting
It’s coming and it’s going
The world is everlasting
It’s coming and it’s going
It’s coming and it’s going

RARE WHITE ORCA SPOTTED OFF RUSSIAN COAST
Rare White Orca Spotted off Russian Coast
Scientists have captured the first images of an adult white orca—or killer whale—in the wild. Iceberg, as he has been affectionately named, was spotted swimming with his pod off the coast ofKamchatka in eastern Russia. Orcas are typically black, with white on their undersides, above each eye, and on each flank. Until now, the only all-white orcas that had been observed were young, and none had ever been recorded surviving into adulthood. Researchers hope that future observation will help them determine whether Iceberg is a true albino or whether some other factor is responsible for his unique lack of pigmentation. More… Discuss

Rupert Murdoch apologizes admits phone-hacking ‘cover-up’ (from Breaking News via CNN)

Excerpts: “He and his father have always denied knowing about the scale of phone hacking, which police say could have affected thousands of people, ranging from celebrities and politicians to crime victims and war veterans.
Dozens of people have been arrested in criminal investigations into phone and e-mail hacking and police bribery, and police asked prosecutors last week to charge at least eight people.
The suspects include at least one journalist and a police officer, the Crown Prosecution Service said, declining to name them.
No charges have been filed, and the Crown Prosecution Service said it did not know when a decision would be made about charges.
In addition to the Leveson Inquiry and London’s Metropolitan Police, two parliamentary committees also are looking into media conduct.
News Corp. shut down The News of the World, its British Sunday tabloid, last summer after public outrage at the scale of illegal eavesdropping its journalists did in search of stories.”

Foodbank handouts double as more families end up on the breadline (from the Guardian)

Excerpts: “Five years ago debt was the issue. Now it is benefit delays and delays in getting crisis loans. There are serious inefficiencies in the welfare system,” he said.
In previous years, the vast majority of foodbank customers came just once, to help them over a temporary crisis, said Mould, but the charity was now seeing more repeat customers. “If you are on a low income and you are dealing with a deterioration in that as a result of higher food prices, higher rents and falling wages, you are going to get more people who just cannot hold it together.”

San Gabriel River Trail

San Gabriel River Trail (my photographic memoirs)
Note to the reader: If you are not from Los Angeles, and want to bike, please use another map for freeways identification, or note that on the map above, there is mention of a “705 Fwy“, that in fact is “710 Fwy” (aka Long Beach Freeway). There is no 705 Fwy around here folks!
I always believed that reference materials such as dictionaries and definitely maps should be most accurate in purpose and execution.
The photos are taken at the start of the trail, in Seal Beach. Now freshly resurfaced it’s a joy to ride on!

Dido – Life for Rent lyrics
“Life For Rent”
I haven’t ever really found a place that I call home
I never stick around quite long enough to make it
I apologize once again I’m not in love
But it’s not as if I mind
that your heart ain’t exactly breaking
It’s just a thought, only a thought
But if my life is for rent and I don’t learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
I’ve always thought
that I would love to live by the sea
To travel the world alone
and live more simply
I have no idea what’s happened to that dream
Cos there’s really nothing left here to stop me
It’s just a thought, only a thought
But if my life is for rent and I don’t learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
If my life is for rent and I don’t learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
While my heart is a shield and I won’t let it down
While I am so afraid to fail so I won’t even try
Well how can I say I’m alive
If my life is for rent and I don’t learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
If my life is for rent and I don’t learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
Cos nothing I have is truly mine

Today Birthday: MAX PLANCK (1858)
Max Planck (1858)
Planck was an influential German physicist whose work on black body radiation earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918. He also discovered the elementary quantum of action, now known as Planck’s constant. As the influential president of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society, he denounced Hitler‘s persecution of Jewish scientists and resigned in protest in 1937. Tragically, four of Planck’s five children died before he did. One of his sons was executed after being implicated in what plot? More… Discuss
