Minor hydrogen leak at closed Calif. nuclear plant

The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES—The operators of the shuttered San Onofre nuclear power plant say a hydrogen leak is the latest problem to plague the troubled plant, but it was small and presented no risk to workers or the public.Plant operator Southern California Edison said in a statement Monday that the leak was discovered in a non-nuclear part of the facility Sunday and has been reported to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/RSeFa9) reports that hydrogen is used to cool electrical generators at the plant, and a pipe fitting will be replaced because of the leak.

The plant located between Los Angeles and San Diego hasn’t produced power since Jan. 31 because of excessive wear in its reactors, and it’s not clear when, or if, it will return to service.

MESSEL PIT

Messel Pit

One of the most significant fossil sites in the world, the Messel Pit is a former shale quarry in Germany. About 47 million years ago during the Eocene Epoch, the area was home to a lake, and archaeologists hypothesize that it periodically released clouds of poisonous volcanic gases. Insects, fish, birds, and mammals that died there were preserved with incredible detail—down to fur and feathers—in the lake’s sediment. Prehistoric versions of what modern animals have been found there? More… Discuss

This day in the Yesteryear: USA PATRIOT ACT SIGNED INTO LAW (2001) (Mahalia Jackson – Trouble of the World)

USA PATRIOT Act Signed into Law (2001)

Enacted quickly and with little opposition in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the sweeping USA PATRIOT Act dramatically enhanced the powers of law enforcement and intelligence-gathering agencies within the US. The bill has since come under increasing scrutiny and criticism, and aspects of it have faced legal challenges in the courts. After it was renewed in 2006, most of its sections became permanent. What section of the act has riled librarians in particular? More… Discuss

Today’s Birthday: MAHALIA JACKSON (1911) (He’s got the whole world – Lord don’t move the Mountain)

Mahalia Jackson (1911)

As a child, Jackson sang at the New Orleans church where her father preached. After moving to Chicago, she sang with a touring gospel quintet. Her warm, powerful voice first came to wider public attention in the 1930s. Called “The Queen of Gospel,” she sang at an inaugural party for US President John F. Kennedy, at the 1963 March on Washington, and at the funeral of Martin Luther King, Jr. Despite many offers, she refused to sing secular songs. Jackson was born with what physical deformity? More… Discuss
