Linguists Tracking Slang through Twitter

Before the advent of social networkslinguists had difficulty obtaining reliable data to study and track the spread of language. Now, researchers are taking advantage of the social media site Twitter to study the evolution of language over time and the spread of slangphrases and even emoticons.. Researchers at multiple US universities are currently collaborating on a study that will examine 40 million messages from approximately 400,000 individuals from specific locations to see how geographic areas influence each other’s use of language. More… Discuss
