BULGARIAN GOVERNMENT RESIGNS

Bulgarian Government Resigns

After weeks of protests against rising power prices, worsening living standards, and alleged government corruption, Bulgarian demonstrators have succeeded in toppling their country’s government. Prime Minister Boiko Borisov had at first tried to appease the people by promising to cut electricity prices and possibly revoke foreign-owned power companies’ distribution licenses, but when protests turned violent on Tuesday, he decided to step down. On Wednesday, Borisov submitted his government’s resignation, explaining that he would not “participate in a government under which police are beating people.” More… Discuss

Quotation: Mark Twain on Humal Behavior

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man.

Today’s Birthday: JEANNE CALMENT (1875)

Jeanne Calment (1875)

At the age of 100, Calment was still riding a bicycle around her native Arles, France. She lived on her own until she was 110 and smoked until she was 117. She saw the Eiffel Tower being built and remembered selling colored pencils to Vincent van Gogh as a girl in her family’s shop. By the time she died in 1997 at the age of 122, Calment had lived the longest confirmed human life in history—and outlived her entire family. What foods have been cited as contributing to Calment’s longevity? More… Discuss

This Day in the Yesteryear: THE CREATION OF THE PEACE SYMBOL (1958)

The Creation of the Peace Symbol (1958)

Historically, the idea of peace has been represented by symbols that attempt to transcend differences of culture, such as the white dove, the olive branch, and the broken rifle. The now-familiar line-drawing of a crow’s foot in a circle was created specifically for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament by British artist Gerald Holtom, but it quickly caught on as a general, international sign for peace. Holtom has stated that it is derived from the semaphore flag signals for what two letters? More…Discuss

The peace sign has survived over 50 years because it is a symbol of hope, and because it is a philosophy uniting loving people.

Directed and filmed by Zev, The Symbol of Peace will share the inspiring stories and dreams of the people who love the peace sign, and who have created their own peace signs to display on their homes and businesses and parks. Here in Woodstock, New York, we are surrounded by the symbol; it is part of our daily landscape. It seems fitting for Woodstock to be the center of the documentary.

We’ll balance the presentation with comments from individuals who have different views of the symbol.

We think these stories will help us focus once more on the dream of peace.

Ken Kolsbun, the author of Peace: The Biography of a Symbol (published by National Geographic) has graciously offered to lend his perspective on the peace sign’s history. In addition, Gea Austen, daughter of Eric Austen (the creator of the first peace badges) will be sharing her stories as well. Creators and owners of peace signs in Woodstock NY (including Alex Nahow, Lucy Scala, Jesse Reimer and Bill Topazio) and elsewhere are already eager to share their stories with us.

“Austerity is a glass half empty held upside down!”

Not only in Bulgaria do people oppose austerity, rising prices and government violence.

This video is called Greece: general strike brings country to standstill.

Tens of thousands of Greeks marched around the country during a general strike against austerity: here.

Tens of thousands of workers marched through the centre of Brussels close to the European Union headquarters today, to protest against cuts that have hit their pay and stopped index-linked pay rises, and to demand initiatives to boost employment: here.

India: Millions of people stayed away from work today as unions launched a two-day general strike against spiralling price rises and government plans to open up the economy [to foreign monopoly corporations]: here.

Protests and strikes brought Egyptian city Port Said to a standstill for a fourth day running today as protesters demanded official accountability over 40 deaths last month: here.

Updated excerpt from Codex Alimentarius — The End of Health Freedom

Available Here

Brandon Turbeville
Activist Post

Over the last two years, I have written extensively about the Codex Alimentarius guidelines and how they relate specifically to vitamin and mineral supplements, food irradiation, and the use of Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH).

I have also detailed the history and workings of the international organization as well as many of the current day to day manifestations of Codex guidelines as they appear in domestic policy.

However, there is yet another area in which Codex guidelines will play a major role in the development of food policy – namely, the proliferation of Genetically Modified Food.

The Codex committee that serves as the main battleground for the consideration of GM food is the Codex Committee on Food Labeling. This committee is extremely relevant due to the fact that it can…

Paper to Use

imagesRegular exercise can help protect you from heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, noninsulin-dependent diabetes, obesity, back pain, osteoporosis, and can improve your mood and help you to better manage stress.

For the greatest overall health benefits, experts recommend that you do 20 to 30 minutes of aerobic activity three or more times a week and some type of muscle strengthening activity and stretching at least twice a week. However, if you are unable to do this level of activity, you can gain substantial health benefits by accumulating 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity a day, at least five times a week.

If you have been inactive for a while, you may want to start with less strenuous activities such as walking or swimming at a comfortable pace. Beginning at a slow pace will allow you to become physically fit without straining your body. Once you are…
