The history of the statue

Doamna Stanca (?

Cinstirea memoriei Doamnei Stanca

WHO Environmental Health Criteria 118: Inorganic Mercury. World Health Organization,
Geneva, 1991
The WHO has determined that dental amalgam is the predominant source of human exposure
to mercury.
human daily dose of mercury from various sources is:
Dental amalgam = 3.0-17.0µg/day (Hg vapor)
Fish and Seafood = 2.3 µg/day (methylmercury)
Other food = 0.3 µg/day(inorganic Hg)
Air & Water = Negligible traces
“A specific no-observed–effect level (NOEL) cannot be established”
In 1991 Dr. Murray Vimy our founder participated in the WHO assessment of the daily dose
received from amalgam in Genoa, Italy. The conclusions of this expert ad hoc committee are
now in the Criteria document 118. Email: Murray Vimy <dr-vimy@shaw.ca>

Inhalation of mercury vapor (Hg0) inhibits binding of GTP to rat brain tubulin, thereby inhibiting tubulin polymerization into microtubules. A similar molecular lesion has also been observed in 80% of brains from patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) compared to age-matched controls. However the precise site and mode of action of Hg ions remain illusive. Therefore, the present study examined whether Hg ions could affect membrane dynamics of neurite growth cone morphology and behavior. Since tubulin is a highly conserved cytoskeletal protein in both vertebrates and invertebrates, we hypothesized that growth cones from animal species could be highly susceptible to Hg ions. To test this possibility, the identified, large Pedal A (PeA) neurons from the central ring ganglia of the snail Lymnaea stagnalis were cultured for 48 h in 2 ml brain conditioned medium (CM). Following neurite outgrowth, metal chloride solution (2 μl) of Hg, Al, Pb, Cd, or Mn (10-7 M) was pressure applied directly onto individual growth cones. Time-lapse images with inverted microscopy were acquired prior to, during, and after the metal ion exposure. We demonstrate that Hg ions markedly disrupted membrane structure and linear growth rates of imaged neurites in 77% of all nerve growth cones. When growth cones were stained with antibodies specific for both tubulin and actin, it was the tubulin/microtubule structure that disintegrated following Hg exposure. Moreover, some denuded neurites were also observed to form neurofibrillary aggregates. In contrast, growth cone exposure to other metal ions did not effect growth cone morphology, nor was their motility rate compromised. To determine the growth suppressive effects of Hg ions on neuronal sprouting, cells were cultured either in the presence or absence of Hg ions. We found that in the presence of Hg ions, neuronal somata failed to sprout, whereas other metalic ions did not effect growth patterns of cultured PeA cells. We conclude that this visual evidence and previous biochemical data strongly implicate Hg as a potential etiological factor in neurodegeneration.

Leonard Cohen talking about Marianne – Hydra Video

“So Long Marianne”

Come over to the window, my little darling,
I’d like to try to read your palm.
I used to think I was some kind of Gypsy boy
before I let you take me home.
Now so long, Marianne, it’s time that we began
to laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again. Well you know that I love to live with you,
but you make me forget so very much.
I forget to pray for the angels
and then the angels forget to pray for us.

Now so long, Marianne, it’s time that we began …

We met when we were almost young
deep in the green lilac park.
You held on to me like I was a crucifix,
as we went kneeling through the dark.

Oh so long, Marianne, it’s time that we began …

Your letters they all say that you’re beside me now.
Then why do I feel alone?
I’m standing on a ledge and your fine spider web
is fastening my ankle to a stone.

Now so long, Marianne, it’s time that we began …

For now I need your hidden love.
I’m cold as a new razor blade
You left when I told you I was curious,
I never said that I was brave.

Oh so long, Marianne, it’s time that we began …

Oh, you are really such a pretty one.
I see you’ve gone and changed your name again.
And just when I climbed this whole mountainside,
to wash my eyelids in the rain!

Oh so long, Marianne, it’s time that we began …

Leonard Cohen – Days Of Kindness

Days of Kindness

(Stranger Music, 1993)

Greece is a good place
to look at the moon, isn’t it
You can read by moonlight
You can read on the terrace
You can see a face
as you saw it when you were young
There was good light then
oil lamps and candles
and those little flames
that floated on a cork in olive oil
What I loved in my old life
I haven’t forgotten
It lives in my spine
Marianne and the child
The days of kindness
It rises in my spine
and it manifests as tears
I pray that loving memory
exists for them too
the precious ones I overthrew
for an education in the world

Leonard Cohen-I tried to leave you

I tried to leave you, I don’t deny
I closed the book on us, at least a hundred times.
I’d wake up every morning by your side.

The years go by, you lose your pride.
The baby’s crying, so you do not go outside,
and all your work it’s right before your eyes.

Goodnight, my darling, I hope you’re satisfied,
the bed is kind of narrow, but my arms are open wide.
And here’s a man still working for your smile.

This is for You – poem by Leonard Cohen (Ken Middleton Reciting)

To My Dear and Loving Husband
A poem recited with love by
Ken Middleton from the United-Kingdom
The poem is by Leonard Cohen
This Is For You‘ from Selected Poems 1956-1968
This is for you
it is my full heart
it is the book I meant to read you
when we were old
Now I am a shadow
I am restless as an empire
You are the woman
who released me
I saw you watching the moon
you did not hesitate
to love me with it
I saw you honouring the windflowers
caught in the rocks
you loved me with them
On the smooth sand
between pebbles & shoreline
you welcomed me into the circle
more than a guest
All this happened
in the truth of time
in the truth of flesh
I saw you with a child
you brought me to his perfume
and his visions
without demand of blood
On so many wooden tables
adorned with food and candles
a thousand sacraments
which you carried in your basket
I visited my clay
I visited my birth
until I became small enough
and frightened enough
to be born again
I wanted you for your beauty
you gave me more than yourself
you shared your beauty
this I only learned tonight
as I recall the mirrors
you walked away from
after you had given them
whatever they claimed
for my initiation
Now I am a shadow
I long for the boundaries
of my wandering
and I move
with the energy of your prayer
and I move
in the direction of your prayer
for you are kneeling
like a bouquet
in a cave of bone
behind my forehead
and I move toward a LOVE
you have dreamed for me.

Leonard Cohen – Book of Longing (KCRW Demo Version)

I can’t make the hillslonging-il
The system is shot
I’m living on pills
For which I thank G-d

I followed the course
From chaos to art
Desire the horse
Depression the cart

I sailed like a swan
I sank like a rock
But time is long gone
Past my laughing stock

My page was too white
My ink was too thin
The day wouldn’t write
What the night pencilled in

My animal howls
My angel’s upset
But I’m not allowed
A trace of regret

For someone will use
What I couldn’t be
My heart will be hers

She’ll step on the path
She’ll see what I mean
My will cut in half
And freedom between

For less than a second
Our lives will collide
The endless suspended
The door open wide

Then she will be born
To someone like you
What no one has done

She’ll continue to do
I know she is coming
I know she will look
And that is the longing

Leonard Cohen – Master Song (1967)

Master Song, by Leonard Cohen
I believe that you heard your master sing
When I was sick in bed.
I suppose that he told you everything
That I keep locked away in my head.
Your master took you traveling,
Well at least that’s what you said.
And now do you come back to bring
Your prisoner wine and bread? You met him at some temple, where
They take your clothes at the door.
He was just a numberless man in a chair
Who’d just come back from the war.
And you wrap up his tired face in your hair
And he hands you the apple core.
Then he touches your lips now so suddenly bare
Of all the kisses we put on some time before.

And he gave you a German Shepherd to walk
With a collar of leather and nails,
And he never once made you explain or talk
About all of the little details,
Such as who had a word and who had a rock,
And who had you through the mails.
Now your love is a secret all over the block,
And it never stops not even when your master fails.

And he took you up in his aeroplane,
Which he flew without any hands,
And you cruised above the ribbons of rain
That drove the crowd from the stands.
Then he killed the lights in a lonely Lane
And, an ape with angel glands,
Erased the final wisps of pain
With the music of rubber bands

And now I hear your master sing,
You kneel for him to come.
His body is a golden string
That your body is hanging from.
His body is a golden string,
My body has grown numb.
Oh now you hear your master sing,
Your shirt is all undone.

And will you kneel beside this bed
That we polished so long ago,
Before your master chose instead
To make my bed of snow?
Your eyes are wild and your knuckles are red
And you’re speaking far too low.
No I can’t make out what your master said
Before he made you go.

Then I think you’re playing far too rough
For a lady who’s been to the moon;
I’ve lain by this window long enough
To get used to an empty room.
And your love is some dust in an old man’s cough
Who is tapping his foot to a tune,
And your thighs are a ruin, you want too much,
Let’s say you came back some time too soon.

I loved your master perfectly
I taught him all that he knew.
He was starving in some deep mystery
Like a man who is sure what is true.
And I sent you to him with my guarantee
I could teach him something new,
And I taught him how you would long for me
No matter what he said no matter what you’d do.

I believe that you heard your master sing
While I was sick in bed,
I’m sure that he told you everything
I must keep locked away in my head.
Your master took you travelling,
Well at least that’s what you said,
And now do you come back to bring
Your prisoner wine and bread?

Quotation: Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) on on keeping with tradition (not a positive one though)

I cannot imagine why we should be at the expense to furnish wit for succeeding ages, when the former have made no sort of provision for ours.

Today’s Birthday: BURRHUS FREDERIC “B.F.” SKINNER (1904)

Burrhus Frederic “B.F.” Skinner (1904)

Forgoing his early goal of being a writer, Skinner earned his doctorate in psychology at Harvard, where he later spent much of his teaching career. A leading exponent of the behavioral approach to psychology, Skinner maintained that learning occurs as a result of an organism responding to, or operating on, its environment, a phenomenon he called operant conditioning. Skinner did extensive research with animals and, during WWII, worked for the US government training what animal to guide missiles? More… Discuss

US Approves Antiretroviral Drug AZT as a Treatment for AIDS (1987)

Though it was originally developed as an anticancer drug in 1964, azidothymidine (AZT) was never approved for that purpose. Two decades later, however, it was discovered to be effective in fighting HIV. At the time, thousands of people were dying of AIDS, and no other treatment was forthcoming. For humanitarian reasons, the drug was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in a matter of months, rather than the usual eight to 10 years. How does the drug prevent HIV from reproducing? More… Discuss

Grand Canyon to Be Tightrope Walker’s Next Challenge

Last June, aerialist Nik Wallenda captivated the public with his daring tightrope crossing of Niagara Falls. He had planned to pull off the stunt without a safety harness, but the network airing the event insisted that he wear one. This coming June, however, he will be completely untethered as he attempts to traverse the Grand Canyon—on a cable suspended 1,500 feet (457 meters) above the ground. His 1,500-foot-long (457-meter-long) tightrope walk is to be televised live on the Discovery ChannelMore… Discuss
