I have recently experienced some unwanted activity on my website. To be more specific, some of the followers have associated with you too, my very welcome and followers.
In today’s world , I should think that the most fundamental right as a blog administrator would be to decides, upon revising the content who will, or not be approved to become your blogging family.
As I requested several times and through different avenues, WordPress.com so far dismissed my requests to implement Setting choices, allowing us to decide who will, or will not follow us, based upon subject matter, interests, language, and so many other valid criteria in existence here at WordPress.com.
At this time WordPress.com has no way to allow us the choice of moderating access, compared to Twitter, or even Facebook.
I think that Twitter services have a direct, easy to use, friendly way of empowering a member to freedom of association, and everyone of us is entitled to, without having o ask WordPress.com administration to do that for us upon request (which as I said earlier does not work, or even worse to have to directly contact such followers, which is beneath me (at least).
Here is how Twitter deal with this issue, at a immediate action of the twitter user (highlighted in yellow):

Following is one example for the reasons I requested that word.press.com, allow for administrators’ settings. It would save time, and allow one the peace and tranquility of not having to interact with unwitty profane and vulgar characters!

WP has changed a great deal. It’s become very business oriented – so many product/company blogs running around “following” everyone to drum up business for themselves….no interest in all in author’s posts.
Trolls and annoying commenters – a nuisance and annoyance. We should be able to block or a version of “unfriending”. Basically you can permit or not permit one to write comments, by approving/not approving the first time a person appears on your blog, but still – it’s a constant battle to read/delete/edit comments from someone who appears to be OK at first , then goes nuts. (Happiness guess – don’t start – I do know about the few controls we have – and about deciding what words will be banned…)
WP really wants lots of clicks back, forth and across the blogging platform – it makes their numbers look good to those who run ads. Bloggers are the free candy that lures readers/potential customers to those ads which means dollars to WP.
WP might want to consider though, that lack of controls to who follows and who can’t could be a problem for those avoiding stalkers, violent domestic stalkers…and other unsavory readers you’d rather be invisible to. (Yes, WP Happiness – I do know about making blogs private….that’s not what this is all about)
WP has really changed. Selling through blogs once was prohibited…it was all about blogging, not selling.
It’s been a congenial group – mostly with manners and consideration. We’ll see. Have we been sold out?
Meanwhile never forget, bloggers and what they write – for free – is what brings readers and consumers to WP…so maybe a little more listening by WP is in order.

I fully agree and then there is the nonexistent blog/blogger, of those days whom ideas or content i di not agree with or support and those eho blog only in an completely unknown language, who can run with all kind of thoughts. I could care less for any languages except few. But, yes, the commercial blogs, are inserting themselves into our lives like this too, and wp will not give any freedom, they graball thr power, give nothing!

I have known of instances where people seriously needed to be able to block people from their site that were being abusive. I know WordPress will shut them down or suspend them temporarily if there is threat of physical harm…but cursing and name calling, they disregard. I have never had hecklers or trolls on my site. Not yet anyway. But I would mostly start doing what some friends do, and that is to monitor comments, edit crap out. I don’t really like that either, because the real time conversation is what makes wordpress so much fun. IMHO.

Thanks! I think that not to have the possibility of blocking whoever you feel you sould from accessing you is a abuse of power that wordpress gets away with! See twitter: all you can do is (and it takes 2 seconds) is to block the person from your timeline! Nothing wrong with it, no the end of the world…just a personal choice…If I cannot even make a personal choice, than what is it that I can do…Besides I pay for space!
And indeed, it takes time to deal with this “created issue” and they don’t badge!

Yes, it is something isn’t it? It’s not only comments(you don’t like them you can spam them), but the kind of unwanted following, for which you can’t do anything, except report! (but nothing ever happen after reporting! a real shame! Thanks for commenting!

I’d certainly like to have that choice, too. I like to have many followers, of course, and see that my blogs are popular, but I’d rather do without “commercial” followers who only want to entice me to their websites.

Well, for whatever reason, WordPress believes that it owns us, and out freedom to chose who’s following…then they promise that if you complain, they do something, but mostly, just the complaining is so laborious, and following, and you still see gravatars with no connection to any site stuck among your followers…All wrong of course, blatantly wrong!

Of course…That’s the normal reaction! We have to amass enough wind behind the sails to make wordpress give us back our natural right to protect ourselves…THey should do whatever to protect themselves too, but not by using us to report, etc., etc., and trouw at us carpet statement that don’t even apply: Do you really think these smart guys don’t understand what we (probably them too) want…More importantly why?
What if your are questioned regarding your association with a expreme group blogging against everything (or anyone whose views you couldn’t care for, period!) When you probably don’t even know about? or can’t remove, have reported, and nothing got gone: Whose fault is it then? We should be able to:
1. block
2. report as necessary
3. continue to be able to comb through membership in order to protect it from inadvertently find themselves visiting such blogs…
4. In the end…wordpress would only to gain as a business, not having to interfere with ours! (only by denying our right!)
As far as the e-mail only, subscribers, people I don’t even know, with no valid, or invalid gravatar (how they do it is an enigma to me (I wouldn’t know how, nor would I care to), how is it that even those entities can attach themselves, and have anything to say about your blog and posts: they should have a legitimate blog, as you and I: after all they are FREE, right?
THanks for getting back to me, and know that you are not the only one, by far, concerned about the complacency of the rest of the bloggers, before wordpress to start with…but then isn’t it the sweetest battle, the one you are watching others fight, from the comfort of their living room?

I knew I was not alone, and to my amazement: I can’t believe wordpress takes us for fools, the way they do, under the false pretence of freedom of speech!
I just hope that the community following me, do understand that if they access any of these unwanted, uninvited, unsavory characters, they do so at their own risk, as there are no warnings, and we don’t even know what the agenda of some of them is…
When you access your ‘Settings’, under ‘Discussion’ there are two black lists: Copy and paste the URLs of the people you don’t want at your blog in both of them.
Also, when you receive a comment you did not care for, and it is more of trend, spam the commentator, which will keep that person from further commenting!
It really is more of an illusion that it is so easy to create a blog….there are many, many things, that a novice in language and code and programming (such as myself) spent many days trying to understand… (on my own, again! 🙂

Thanks for the tip ..as it gets very annoying. I almost feel that I am being bully by someone and members of that community for not agreeing with them…I am up front and I call it as I see it…I try to be nice but they persist my Latin blood boils and I fight back. .I am not willing to take any b.s. from any of the waste of skin as I call them….

I think the problem lies in how the filters would work. If you block an entire IP, then other people with similar IP numbers would also be blocked. You can make your blog private to the public and choose only those whom you wish to read it.

IP are unique…I do not want to go private (e.g. how would have you learned about euzicasa, if it were private?) The solution is simple as transition from day to night and vice versa, and as natural! See your settings, and what they can accomplish on your twitter account, or even facebook, or You-Tube: This is not about you living as if you punished, but just simply blocking access of unsavory characters Which if wordtress were to do their job would be private, or language, restricted to their message, content, political views, etc….It is that simple, it should be made that
simple.
Please comment after you visit your twitter account, and check out your setting there! (then you’ll converse on something based on fact, not just generalities…I know the generalities, so do others. they all lack specificity in application!

To answer your question, however, you always have the option of not letting a person post on your blog..but even if they do post, they will look like idiots and you will still look intelligent. The content of your blog is not compromised. You are an excellent writer with an excellent blog. The invader will only look like a fool, if permitted to speak. I do know it is upsetting, though. I have a stalker on my own blog, so I do relate, but at the end of the day, we can only be responsible for ourselves. Right?

Well sharechair, It is correct that you can do that with the comments, if they comment, but it is still short of what tweeter, and, facebook, you tube, etc, does with one step operation…. Besides, I don’t know enough to be able to tell what other things can a spammer, hacker, etc can do in such an situation.

Good post! I agree absolutely, if for no other reason than to get back at those who follow my blog just to trick me into coming to check out their spam-filled sites. But I can live with unwanted followers. An even more pressing need is the ability to dump the avatars of those who “Like” my blog in the hopes that my readers will click on them!

Whatever the reasons, if there is need for any, the idea of unreasonable control is the most disturbing of all: WordPress refuses to treat people as free individuals, by imposing an unreasonable burden equating to mastership!

You can get some additional control if you pay the extra $99 a year to upgrade your blog from euzicasa.wordpress.com to, say, euzicasa.com. As long as you’re euzicasa.wordpress.com, you give 95% control to WordPress. You can go even further and gain 100% control by moving from WordPress.com to your own hosted site and installing the WordPress software to your hosted site. You’ll get the WordPress software from WordPress.org rather than WordPress.com. As an example, my http://www.russelrayphotos2.com site is a $99 a year upgrade. Otherwise it would be russelrayphotos2.wordpress.com. My other WordPress site, http:russelray.com, is WordPress.org software downloaded to my chosen host. I have 100% control over it.

No problem Mike, I just don’t have the energy to address this cause that as you say is more than personal. Actually it is systemic, and that’s the reason for which WP pans under the rug.. Time only will prove me right! I still hope that somewhere in one of the many fluffy board room WP bosses, think these issues through!
Funny thing is: It would benefit them first! But when you’re raking in monies, the way they do it seems less important to see your own interest!

as an aside, i just read today’s Guardian newspaper that i buy here in Vancouver at considerable expense (its a UK newspaper that i grew attached to when i was studying in England, so i miss it if i dont get it every week!)….anyway, i read in that paper about the boss of Google, who is now worth much more than even the Queen of England no less…and claims to know a lot more about us users than we do about ourselves! i dont know how he does that…but you get my point about fluffed up boardroom directors earning mega money….but failing to address simple issues like those you describe.

I have already formulated correspondence, regarding the settings that do not allow an site administrator to choose (by blocking or allowing the another website to follow> It is imperative that you, since you don’t seem to take responsibility (like Twitter does) to address my concern (is it only me? I think that in the past you allowed us to moderate, not only comments, but follows) from commercialism trivialization, profanity, mature content!

Your comment, doe not address the issue at hand: this is not about having comments blocked, barred, or in other way moderated, by me.
this is about me being able to block websites for following me, and becoming an embarrassment, harassment and exposure to unwanted language, and behavior, for wish, I am responsible, without being able to do anything about, and loose, possibly membership of my followers

We do not provide a way to block Followers at WordPress.com besides just making your blog Private.
Please note that Followers only interact with you as far as you let them. You will receive notification of the new follower, but that’s really the only thing outside of your control. You don’t have to follow them back or participate on their blog. And, if they comment on your blog, you can simply blacklist them.

We do not provide a way to block Followers at WordPress.com besides just making your blog Private.
