Today’s Birthday: MARY PICKFORD (1892) a Movie Star

Mary Pickford (1892)

One of the first movie stars, Pickford earned a reputation as “America’s Sweetheart” by playing a series of innocent, curly-haired young women on the silent screen. She was also a shrewd businesswoman. After cofounding United Artists, she came to exert a profound influence on the film industry as one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood. In 1927, she became one of the original founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. For what role did Pickford win an Academy AwardMore… Discuss

“AS IT IS IN LIFE”, starring Mary Pickford, is one of the hundreds of drama films directed by D.W. Griffith in that incredibly rich and innovative period of his tenure at Biograph, from 1908 to 1913. It is also one of the most singularly beautiful works he created during this time, demonstrating his especially sophisticated use of depth and movement within the frame.

The story itself is unremarkable: a poor father finds work at a pigeon farm, after being forced to beg and explaining that he has a daughter to feed. He is reunited with an old sweetheart, whom he intends to marry. Upon realizing that he can’t support both a wife and a child, he sacrifices the relationship in order to take care of his daughter.

Years later, the daughter returns home from school and greets her aging, worn father, vowing to care for him in his old age. However, when she falls in love with a young man, it tears her relationship with her father apart. Feeling broken and betrayed, the father goes away. Later the boy and girl are married, and the girl – now a mother – is reunited with her father, who rejoices over his new grandchild.

This Day in the Yesteryear: THE WPA IS ESTABLISHED (1935) Will we have to wait till 2035 for a new deal?

The WPA Is Established (1935)

Part of US President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal program, the Works Progress—later Projects—Administration aimed to stimulate the economy during the Great Depression and preserve the skills and self-respect of unemployed persons by providing them useful work. By the time it was terminated in 1943, the WPA had employed 8.5 million people and funded the construction of roads, buildings, bridges, parks, and airports—as well as the production of art. What did critics pejoratively call the WPA? More… Discuss

As President Roosevelt presides over the creation of new federal agencies to combat the effects of the Depression, nowhere is the effect of new public works projects more apparent than in Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia‘s New York City. Though FDR, the American aristocrat, and LaGuardia, the son of immigrants, are unlikely partners, together they expand and redefine the role of government in people’s lives.

Pay What You Weigh

In November, Samoa Air did away with standard ticket fares and instituted a pay-what-you-weigh system, becoming the world’s first airline to do so. The airline industry has for some time debated the merits of such pricing, since larger passengers take up more seatspace and cause airplanes to consume more fuel; however, discrimination concerns have thus far deterred major carriers from making the switch. Samoa Air’s CEO claims that consumers have been supportive of the new pricing plan, which charges adults up to WS$1.32 ($0.57) per kg for domestic flights and WS$2.40 ($1.03) per kg for international flights to American SamoaMore… Discuss

THE LEATHERMAN

The Leatherman

For more than 30 years in the mid- and late 1800s, a figure known as the Leatherman regularly walked a 365-mile route through Connecticut and New York. He was famous for his handmade suit made entirely of leather, and townspeople would save food for him in anticipation of his arrival every 34 days. He lived in caves, which he heated by building fires. Very little is known about his background. Though he was said to speak French, he communicated mostly by gestures. How America Lost Its Four Great Generals

” The quasi-official ideology of the U.S. armed forces holds that generals are virtually interchangeable, that individual personalities don’t matter much, that ordinary grunts are in any case more important than their leaders, and that what really counts are larger systems that make a complex bureaucracy function. There is some truth to all of this. But for all of the bureaucratic heft of the services and the heroism of ordinary soldiers, it is hard to imagine the Civil War having been won without Grant, Sherman, and Sheridan—or World War II without Marshall, Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, Arnold, LeMay, Nimitz, Halsey, and all the other senior…

MCCAIN: ‘I DON’T UNDERSTAND’ FILIBUSTERING GUN CONTROL

” Sen. John McCain (R-Sunday Shows) expressed bewilderment on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that GOP Sens. Cruz, Lee and Paul would filibuster gun control legislation. “I don’t understand it,” McCain said. “The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand.” With all due respect to Sen. McCain, that is almost completely backward.

“I don’t understand why United States senators want to block debate when the leaders said we could have amendments,” McCain noted.

If one believes a legislative proposal is, on its face, unconstitutional, the ability to offer amendments is of little solace. Sens. Cruz, Lee and Paul, among other Senators, believe legislation to limit gun rights is, by its nature, unconstitutional. Amending the legislation to make it slightly less unconstitutional is a fool’s game, and…

Chicken Man kills himself after long fight with Roswell government officials

Phoebe's Detention Room

March 27, 2012

This is one of those stories that often never makes it to the Front Page of any newspaper or website. It’s a story about Property Rights and Eminent domain. It’s the story of one man who tried to fight back; and sadly it’s the story of a man who lost it all in the process. It’s also a story that can happen to anyone who is reading this article.

The story begins back in 2009 when Andrew Wordes, otherwise known as the Roswell Chicken Man, began his fight to raise chickens on his property. In February 2009, the city of Roswell, GA started to cite Andrew Wordes for raising livestock in his backyard. Wordes, who had started raising chickens on his .97-acre homestead in 2005, decided to fight back. And guess what he Won.

But sadly, that’s when the real trouble started:

The Great Hidden Supermarket Scam And Common Sense

Common Sense Is Dead

In Britain, our villages and towns used to have High Streets with butcher’s shops, grocers, greengrocers, bakers, florists, chemists, newsagents etc etc. The High Street was the hub of the community, a place for people to meet and chat and gossip while they shopped. Now, many of our High Streets are either full of empty shops or full of takeaways and charity shops – because the businesses that once made them thrive have been destroyed by the presence of the big supermarkets that lured us away from the High Street with their convenience (EVERYTHING UNDER ONE ROOF!) and their lower prices (HA!) and now we have no option but to shop in the big supermarkets because the little shops have all but disappeared.

The big supermarkets are taking over our lives. They know too much about us. They know what we eat, what we drink, what we wear, what medicines we take, the household goods we buy, what…

Offshore Bank Accounts- Thousands of Names released Investigation

Published on Apr 4, 2013

Secret Files Expose Offshore‘s Global Impact

Dozens of journalists sifted through millions of leaked records and thousands of names to produce ICIJ’s investigation into offshore secrecy

By Gerard Ryle, Marina Walker Guevara, Michael Hudson, Nicky Hager, Duncan Campbell and Stefan Candea

International Consortium of Investigative Journalists

A cache of 2.5 million files has cracked open the secrets of more than 120,000 offshore companies and trusts, exposing hidden dealings of politicians, con men and the mega-rich the world over.

The secret records obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists lay bare the names behind covert companies and private trusts in the British Virgin Islands, the Cook Islands and other offshore hideaways.

They include American doctors and dentists and middle-class Greek villagers as well as families and associates of long-time despots, Wall Street swindlers, Eastern European and Indonesian billionaires, Russian corporate executives, international arms dealers and a sham-director-fronted company that the European Union has labeled as a cog in Iran’s nuclear-development program.

The leaked files provide facts and figures — cash transfers, incorporation dates, links between companies and individuals — that illustrate how offshore financial secrecy has spread aggressively around the globe, allowing the wealthy and the well-connected to dodge taxes and fueling corruption and economic woes in rich and poor nations alike. The records detail the offshore holdings of people and companies in more than 170 countries and territories.

The hoard of documents represents the biggest stockpile of inside information about the offshore system ever obtained by a media organization. The total size of the files, measured in gigabytes, is more than 160 times larger than the leak of U.S. State Department documents by Wikileaks in 2010.

To analyze the documents, ICIJ collaborated with reporters from The Guardian and the BBC in the U.K., Le Monde in France, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Germany, The Washington Post, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and 31 other media partners around the world.

Eighty-six journalists from 46 countries used high-tech data crunching and shoe-leather reporting to sift through emails, account ledgers and other files covering nearly 30 years.

“I’ve never seen anything like this. This secret world has finally been revealed,” said Arthur Cockfield, a law professor and tax expert at Queen’s University in Canada, who reviewed some of the documents during an interview with the CBC. He said the documents remind him of the scene in the movie classic The Wizard of Oz in which “they pull back the curtain and you see the wizard operating this secret machine.”

Mobsters and Oligarchs

The vast flow of offshore money — legal and illegal, personal and corporate — can roil economies and pit nations against each other. Europe’s continuing financial crisis has been fueled by a Greek fiscal disaster exacerbated by offshore tax cheating and by a banking meltdown in the tiny tax haven of Cyprus, where local banks’ assets have been inflated by waves of cash from Russia.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific Opens on Broadway (1949)

Based on James Michener‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific opened on Broadway to great acclaim. Set on a Pacific island during WWII, the musical relates two parallel love stories that are threatened by prejudice and war. PETRIFIED LIGHTNING

Petrified Lightning

When lightning strikes the ground, the intense heat of the current can melt dry sand and create glass. Sometimes, this happens along the path of the lightning itself, leaving a hollow, branching tube of rough, sand-caked glass where the lightning traveled. The interior of the tube is usually very smooth. Such fragments of petrified lightning are known as fulgurites. They can form deep below the surface that was struck or, more rarely, above it. How long is the longest fulgurite ever found? More… Discuss
