Boat Carrying Cyclone Evacuees Capsizes off Burmese Coast

A boat carrying about 100 people being evacuated ahead of Cyclone Mahasen, which is expected to hit westernBurma later in the week, capsized on Monday, and at least 50 of the passengers are feared dead. The evacuees were Rohingya Muslims who had been living in temporary camps in Rakhine after being displaced from their homes by violence last year. Tens of thousands of displaced people are living in vulnerable, low-lying, makeshift camps near the coast, and the evacuations were undertaken at the UN’s urging.
