BIRTH CONTROL PILL LINKED TO LOWER OVARIAN CANCER RISK

Birth Control Pill Linked to Lower Ovarian Cancer Risk

One in 72 women is diagnosed with ovarian cancer, but it may be possible to reduce this risk simply through birth control. A metaanalysis of 24 studies found that, overall, women who had taken the pill had a 27% lower risk of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The risk was further reduced in those who had used the pill for 10 years or longer; women who fell into this category were half as likely as those who had never used an oral contraceptive to receive an ovarian cancer diagnosis. However, previous research has linked the pill to an increased risk of cervical cancerMore…Discuss

Suharto (1921)

Suharto was a relatively unknown army chief in 1965, when he crushed an alleged coup with a ruthless purge of communists and leftists throughout Indonesia that left as many as 1,000,000 dead. In 1967, he replaced the deposed Sukarno as president. He oversaw a return to economic stability and led the violent 1975 invasion of East Timor, which Indonesia soon annexed. Greatly unpopular after the economic unrest of the 1990s, Suharto resigned in 1998. Why was he placed under house arrest in 2000?More… Discuss

Cult of the Supreme Being Inaugurated in France with National Festival (1794)

During the Reign of Terror, leading French revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre devised the Cult of the Supreme Being as the official state religion in an attempt to counter the atheistic Cult of Reason. The deist religion, which avowed patriotism and the immortality of the soul, was celebrated with a huge festival in Paris in 1794. However, other revolutionaries soon sought to end Robespierre’s growing power, and he was guillotined less than two months later. What became of the religion? More… Discuss

Musk

Musk

Used as a popular perfume fixative since ancient times, musk is an odorous substance obtained from a gland of the male musk deer. Its strong odor comes from the organic compound muscone. Musklike substances are also obtained from the muskrat and the civet, and even some plants yield oils that resemble musk. Since musk deer are often killed to extract the gland, ethical concerns—as well as economic ones—have led to the production of synthetic musk. Why has this also come under scrutiny recently? More…Discuss

Take Five – The Dave Brubeck Quartet (1959) (Check out Rodrigo Y Gabriela’s Take 5 too!)

Take Five” is a jazz piece written by Paul Desmond and performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet on their 1959 album “Time Out”. Recorded at Columbia’s 30th Street Studios in New York City on June 25, July 1, and August 18, 1959, this piece became one of the group’s best-known records, famous for its distinctive, catchy saxophone melody and use of the unusual quintuple (5/4) time, from which its name is derived. While “Take Five” was not the first jazz composition to use this meter, it was one of the first in the United States to achieve mainstream significance, reaching number five on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Singles chart. “Take Five” was re-recorded and performed live multiple times by The Dave Brubeck Quartet throughout the group’s career. In addition, there have been various covers of the piece. “Take Five” has also been included in countless movies and television soundtracks, and still receives significant radio play. Upon his death in 1977, Desmond left the rights to royalties for his performances and compositions, including “Take Five”, to the American Red Cross, which has since received combined royalties of approximately $100,000 per year. “Time Out” is a 1959 album by The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Continue reading

(Monkees TV Show 1968)

Long afloat on shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile
‘Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle
And you sang
Sail to me, sail to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you

Did I dream you dreamed about me ?
Were you hare when I was fox ?
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks
For you sing
‘Touch me not, touch me not
Come back tomorrow
Oh my heart, oh my heart
Shies from the sorrow’

I am puzzled as the oyster
I am troubled as the tide
Should I stand amid your breakers ?
Or should I lie with death my bride ?
Hear me sing
‘Swim to me, swim to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you’

Trouble
Oh, trouble, set me free
I have seen your face
And it’s too much, too much for me

Trouble
Oh, trouble, can’t you see
You’re eating my heart away
And there’s nothing much left of me

I’ve drunk your wine
You have made your world mine
So won’t you be fair
So won’t you be fair

I don’t want no more of you
So won’t you be kind to me
Just let me go where
I’ll have to go there

Trouble
Oh, trouble, move away
I have seen your face
And it’s too much for me today

Trouble
Oh, trouble, can’t you see
You have made me a wreck
Now won’t you leave me in my misery

I’ve seen your eyes
And I can see death’s disguise
Hangin’ on me
Hangin’ on me

I’m beat, I’m torn
Shattered and tossed and worn
Too shocking to see
Too shocking to see

Trouble
Oh, trouble, move from me
I have paid my debt
Now won’t you leave me in my misery

Trouble
Oh, trouble, please be kind
I don’t want no fight
And I haven’t got a lot of time

1979 – Vlad Țepeș the Impaler – THE REAL STORY of DRACULA
Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia (1431–1476), also known by his patronymic Dracula (son of the Dragon (Vlad II) Dracul), and posthumously dubbed Vlad the Impaler (Romanian: Vlad Țepeș pronounced, was a three-time Voivode of Wallachia, ruling mainly from 1456 to 1462, the period of the incipient Ottoman conquest of the Balkans. His father was a member of the Order of the Dragon (Dracul) which was founded to protect Christianity in Europe. Dracula means son of the Dragon to indicate his father’s title within the Order of the Dragon.

Vlad III is remembered for spending much of his rule campaigning efforts against the Ottoman Empire and its expansion and for the impaling of enemies.Already during his lifetime, his reputation of excessive cruelty spread abroad, to Germany and elsewhere in Europe. The total number of his victims is estimated in the tens of thousands. The name of the vampire Count Dracula in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula was inspired by Vlad’s patronymic.
