Goldmark came from a large Jewish family, one of 20 children. His father, Ruben Goldmark, was a chazan to the Jewish congregation at Keszthely, Hungary. Karl Goldmark’s older brother Joseph Goldmark became a physician and was later involved in the Revolution of 1848, forced to emigrated to the United States.
