Johann Strauss II – Tales from the Vienna Woods Waltz

The decorative first piano edition of Johann Strauss‘s evocative waltz Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald carries the composer’s respectful dedication to his Highness Prince Constantin Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst (1828-1896), and the work was almost certainly given its world première at a private soirée in the prince’s 16th-century palace in the Augarten, Vienna, during summer 1868. An undated letter from that year, written to the composer by Princess Marie Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst, reads: “Dear Sir, The performance of your beautiful waltz gave me such pleasure recently — that I cannot help asking you kindly to accept a small memento of the unforgettable evening. It is to remind you of another of your finely-chiselled masterpieces, by the blue Danube — whose sound reminds us all of happy hours. With repeated thanks and greatest respect. Fürstin zu Hohenlohe”. (The nature of the Princess’s “memento” is unfortunately not known). Since May 1867 Prince Constantin had held the position of First Master of the Royal Household and had lived in the Augarten residence with his wife Marie (née Princess Sayn-Wittgenstein), the daughter of Franz Liszt’s long-term mistress Princess Carolyne Wittgenstein. Through Marie’s connections the Augarten Palace, situated on the opposite side of the Danube Canal from the inner city of Vienna, became a focal point of cultural life in the Austrian capital. (After the Second World War it became, and has remained, the home of the Vienna Boys’ Choir). Continue reading

Tango‘s Most Famous Song The cafe ‘La Giralda‘ in Montevideo, Uruguay, occupies a special place in Tango history. It was there in the year 1917 that a young Gerardo Matos Rodriguez gave (anonymously) the music score of a tango, in 4/8, he had written to the orchestra of Roberto Firpo to play for the first time. Gerardo was then an adolescent (17 years old) who was barely making it as a student in the faculty of Architecture in Montevideo. Was it modesty? shyness? fear of ridicule? who knows why he wanted to remain anonymous? Firpo only knew that the name of the young composer was Gerardo. It was only later that the full identity of the author was known. He was young, educated, well mannered and sensible. He was also a bit naive. He sold for 20 pesos his rights of authorship to the Breyer publishing house. After some moderate success the composition was forgotten. Seven years later, in 1924, Gerardo was living in Paris and he met Francisco Canaro who had just arrived with his orchestra. That’s when he found out that La Cumparsita was a major hit. The tango lyricists Enrique Maroni and Pascual Contursi had added words to the tango and renamed it ‘Si Supieras’–If you knew. All of Buenos Aires was hearing, dancing, and demanding to buy the score for the tango that was seemingly everywhere in shows, recordings, and broadcasts. Shortly after, La Cumparsita arrived in Paris where, in the full grip of the roaring 20’s, people danced charlestons, shimmys, one-steps, bostons, and when the crowd asked for a tango, they danced La Cumparsita. From Paris La Cumparsita spread to the four corners of the world and has since and forever after become synonymous with Tango.

One of Gounod’s short pieces for piano, “Funeral March of a Marionette”, received a new and unexpected lease of life from 1955 when it was first used as the theme for the television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents. The March was one of the eight records that Alfred Hitchcock selected to take to his desert island when he appeared on the BBC radio program Desert Island Disks in 1959. The March had earlier been used to produce equally suspenseful moments in F. W. Murnau‘s American silent film, “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans” (1927) and Harold Lloyd‘s first sound film, Welcome Danger (1929).om 1955 when it was first used as the theme for the television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents. From Der Spiegel – ‘No Longer in the Cold War‘- Merkel Infuriated by US Spying (click to access report)

Excerpts from Report: German Chancellor Angela Merkel has compared US spying to Cold War tactics and Brussels wants EU facilities checked for American eavesdropping equipment. Concern is growing the scandal could seriously damage trans-Atlantic relations.
The German government reacted strongly on Monday to media reports that the United States has spent years spying on the European Union and on specific European countries. Meanwhile, European Union leaders have both reviled the US for allegedly bugging EU diplomatic missions in Washington, DC, and New York and ordered that bloc facilities be searched for American eavesdropping equipment.”

From CNN – Russian report says Snowden applied for asylum (click to access report)

Excerpts From Report:

“(CNN) — Edward Snowden has applied for asylum in Russia, the state-run RIA Novosti news agency reported Monday, quoting a consular official at the Moscow airport.

However, Russia’s semi-official Interfax news agency continued to report that the head of Russia’s immigration services denied any asylum request had been made.

The confusion reflected the diplomatic tensions over the status of Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who has admitted leaking classified documents on U.S. surveillance programs and is in the international transit area of Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport.

Russian President Vladimir Putin opened the door to Snowden possibly remaining in Russia on Monday, saying he “must stop his work aimed at harming our American partners” if he wants to stay.

Putin had said Snowden should depart the airport for his final destination, wherever it might be.” >>>>>>>>>>>>>MORE<<<<<<<<<<<<

Spread love not war

And the answer is…NEVER!

Footprints of Thoughts

Almost every family

in this countryside has had a family member

who has either

died in a war,

fought in a war,

been lost in a war,

suffers a mental disorder because of being in a war.

So many human lives lost…

so many innocent people killed…

so much LIGHT snuffed out…

WHY?

No war has ever stopped another war…

Young men and women

in our country

are told to fight for democracy…

for freedom for others.

Meanwhile, we are losing our right to assembly here in this country,

we are losing our rights to unionize,

we are losing our right to question…

we are losing our homes…

we are losing our families…

we are losing our health…

the healthcare of our elderly is going to hell…

the education of our young  children is being destroyed…

the number of homeless people…has now developed into homeless families…in every state

something is…
