Between 1990 and 2010, overall US life expectancyrose by three years, from 75.2 to 78.2, yet the medical system’s ability to keep Americans healthy and enjoying a good quality of life has not kept pace. Despite the fact that the US spends more per capita on health care than any other country, it has lagged behind many other wealthy nations on numerous health measures. Lifestyle factors like poor diet and tobacco use likely play a role in this. More…Discuss
Richard Wagner (1813-1883) Columbus Overture in Eb WWV 37a (1835) Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks/Jeffrey Tate
There appeared one day at Magdeburg a friend of Wagner’s, Guido Theodore Apel, poet, dramatist and amateur musician, and a young man of some means, with a play, “Christopher Columbus,” which he de-sired to have mounted in Wagner’s theater and for which Wagner agreed to write incidental music in the form of an overture, chorus and orchestral epilogue.
One of the many things I like to Fado is how sacred and profane are intertwined. As the barrier between the two are virtually nonexistent. As the sacred becomes profane and the sacred profane. Here are two examples that I find wonderful.

Wiener Blut (‘Viennese Blood’ or ‘Viennese Spirit’) op. 354 is a waltz by Johann Strauss II first performed by the composer on 22 April 1873. The new dedication waltz was to celebrate the wedding of the Emperor Franz Josef‘s daughter Archduchess Gisela Louise Maria and Prince Leopold of Bavaria. However, the waltz was also chiefly noted by Strauss’ biographers as the début of Strauss with the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra where for many years, the Philharmonic had dismissed any association with the ‘Waltz King’ as it had not wished to be associated with mere ‘light’ or ‘pops’ music. A theory has recently (1981) been put forth that J. S. Bach did not write this piece. A brief summary of the supporting evidence for this theory can be read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toccata_…
A very interesting version with a bar-graph score (midi sequencer score) gives you a visual idea of the voicing of this piece. watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipzR9b…
