Quotation: Frances Hodgson Burnett about thoughts and thinking

One of the new things people began to find out in the last century was that thoughts—just mere thoughts—are as powerful as electric batteries—as good for one as sunlight is, or as bad for one as poison.

Today’s Birthday: WALTER ROBERT DORNBERGER (1895)

Walter Robert Dornberger (1895)

A German artillery officer during World War I, Dornberger was captured and spent two years in a French prisoner-of-war camp. After his release, he studied engineering, and, beginning in 1932, directed construction of the V-2 rocket, the forerunner of all post-war spacecraft. Along with other German scientists, Dornberger was brought to the US as part of Operation Paperclip and worked as an advisor on guided missiles for the US Air Force. He became a key consultant on what major American venture? More… Discuss

This Day in the Yesteryear: CHRISTOPHER MCCANDLESS’S BODY FOUND (1992)

Christopher McCandless’s Body Found (1992)

The tragic story of Christopher McCandless begins in southern California and ends in the wilds of Alaska, where the 24-year-old’s emaciated remains were found weeks after he had apparently starved to death while trying to live off the land on his own. His journal, in which he chronicled his 113 days in the wilderness, has shed some light on his final months, including where he sheltered—an abandoned bus—and what he last ate, but much will never be known. What was his final message to the world? More… Discuss

FIFTH TIME’S THE CHARM FOR 64-YEAR-OLD CUBA-FLORIDA SWIMMER

Fifth Time’s the Charm for 64-Year-Old Cuba-Florida Swimmer

After four failed attempts to make the 110-mile (177-km) swim across the Florida Straits from Cuba to the US, 64-year-old long-distance swimmer Diana Nyadbecame the first person to complete the crossing without a shark cage or flippers. The achievement was 35 years in the making. She made her first attempt in 1978, when she was just 28, but had to abandon it 42 hours in, after crossing 76 miles. Undeterred, she tried again and again, and after 53 hours in the water this weekend, she finally achieved her goal, sending a message that it is never too late to chase your dreams. More… Discuss
