Leonard Bernstein – Maria (from “West Side Story”)

Leonard Bernstein (1918 – 1990) was probably best known to the public as the longtime music director of the New York Philharmonic, for conducting concerts by many of the world’s leading orchestras, and for writing the music for West Side Story, a musical based on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

TODAY’S HOLIDAY: ZIMBABWE INDEPENDENCE DAY

Zimbabwe Independence Day

Like much of Africa, the area that is now Zimbabwe was long controlled by Europeans. In 1922, the 34,000 European settlers chose to become a self-governing British colony, Southern Rhodesia; in 1923, Southern Rhodesia was annexed by the British Crown. A fight for independence took place in the 1970s. An independent constitution was written for Zimbabwe in London in 1979, and independence followed on April 18, 1980. Independence Day is celebrated in every city and district of the nation with political rallies, parades, traditional dances, singing, and fireworks. More…Discuss

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY: LUCREZIA BORGIA (1480)

Lucrezia Borgia (1480)

Lucrezia was an Italian noblewoman and daughter of the future Pope Alexander VI. Her family came to epitomize the ruthless Machiavellian politics and sexual corruption allegedly characteristic of the Renaissance papacy, but rumors of her participation in her family’s poison plots and of incestuous relations with her father and brother have not been proved. Nevertheless, Lucrezia is often viewed as a femme fatale and has been portrayed as such in many works of art. What are a few examples? More… Discuss

THIS DAY IN THE YESTERYEAR: “BRITISH BANG” ON GERMAN ARCHIPELAGO (1947)

“British Bang” on German Archipelago (1947)

Heligoland is a pair of small German islands located in the North Sea, comprising the main island and the smaller island of Düne. The main island is commonly divided into three geographic sections, the last of which came into being in 1947, when the British Royal Navy detonated 6,700 tonnes of explosives on the island, actually changing its shape. The so-called British Bang was one of the largest non-nuclear single detonations in history. Why did the British bomb the island? More… Discuss

NEWS: HUNDREDS STILL MISSING IN SOUTH KOREA FERRY DISASTER

Hundreds Still Missing in South Korea Ferry Disaster

Hundreds of people, many of them high school students on a field trip, are still missing after a South Korean ferrytraveling from the northwestern port of Incheon to the southern resort island of Jeju capsized on Wednesday morning. There have been about 20 confirmed casualties so far, and at least 179 people have been rescued; still, more than half of the ferry’s 475 passengers and crew remain unaccounted for. Rescue divers have attempted to enter the now-submerged floors of the five-story vessel, where they believe many of the missing may be trapped—and possibly alive in air pockets—but difficult conditions have prevented them from reaching those areas. More… Discuss
