Johann Sebastian Bach – Fantasy and fugue in G minor BWV 542

Franz Hauk at the Great Klais Organ of Liebfrauenmünster Ingolstadt

*****From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia*****
The Great Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542, is an organ prelude and fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach. It acquired that name to distinguish it from the earlier Little Fugue in G minor, which is shorter. This piece is not to be confused with the Prelude and Fugue in A minor, which is also for organ and also sometimes called “the Great”.

It was transcribed for piano by Franz Liszt as S.463.

Robert Huw Morgan plays Bach’s Fantasia and Fugue in G minor on the Fisk-Nanney organ at the Stanford Memorial Church in Stanford, California.

Background

**** Dvořák initially wrote the Suite in A major for piano, Op. 98, B. 184, in New York between February 19 and March 1, 1894.[1] He orchestrated it in two parts more than a year after his return to the United States and immediately before his departure for Europe. The piano version was performed soon after its composition, but the orchestral version waited some years. The orchestral version of the American Suite was first played in concert in 1910 and not published until 1911, seven years after Dvořák’s death in 1904.

today’s holiday: St. Médardus’s Day

St. Médardus’s Day

St. Médardus, or Médard, who lived from about 470 to 560 CE, was the bishop of Vermandois, Noyon, and Tournai in France. Because he was the patron saint of farmers and good weather, he has come to play a role in weather lore similar to that of the English St. Swithin. In Belgium he is known as the rain saint, and there is an old folk rhyme that says, “If it rains on St. Médard‘s Day, it will rain for 40 days.” More… Discuss

today’s birthday: Frank Lloyd Wright (1867): Widely considered the greatest American architect

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867)

Widely considered the greatest American architect, Wright championed the use of open planning as well https://i0.wp.com/img.weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/movie-houses-north-by-northwest-vandamm.jpgas “organic architecture,” a design philosophy that promotes harmony between building and environment. His masterpieces include New York City’s iconic Guggenheim Museum and “Fallingwater,” a breathtaking Pennsylvania house that is cantilevered over a waterfall, with its balconies and terraces seemingly suspended in midair. How many people were murdered at Wright’s home, Taliesin, in 1914? More… Discuss

Sleep Promotes Learning through Synapse Formation (there are so many studies arriving to other conclusions: Why?)

Sleep Promotes Learning through Synapse Formation

Sleep has long been known to play a vital role in the learning process, but the precise science behind it was not fully understood. Using advanced microscopy, researchers were able to observe the formation of new synapses, or connections between nerve cells, in the brain and found that sleep-deprived subjects form fewer new connections than those allowed to sleep properly. Even intense, extended training on a task cannot make up for sleep deprivation. The findings suggest that sleep promotes the formation of new synaptic connections, thereby contributing to learning and memory formation. More… Discuss

Six-Day War: USS Liberty Incident (1967)

During the 1967 Six-Day War, Israeli aircraft and naval forces attacked a US intelligence ship in international waters off the coast of the Sinai Peninsula. Both the Israeli and American governments issued reports concluding that the attack was a tragic mistake, but these conclusions have been challenged from several fronts, and the matter remains controversial in the public debate. How much money did Israel pay the US and the families of the victims in compensation? More… Discuss

Buckypaper: What are its possible uses?

Buckypaper

Scientists have applied inventor Buckminster Fuller‘s name not only to the 60-carbon molecule—the “buckyball”—whose arrangement of atoms resembles his geodesic dome, but to various other objects. Buckypaper, for instance, is a thin sheet made of carbon nanotubes—”buckytubes“—that are approximately 50,000 times thinner than a human hair. Buckypaper is one tenth the weight yet potentially 500 times stronger than steel when its sheets are stacked to form a composite. What are its possible uses? More… Discuss

Excerpts from the article: A year after Mr. Snowden’s revelations, the era of quiet cooperation is over. Telecommunications companies say they are denying requests to volunteer data not covered by existing law. A.T.&T., Verizon and others say that compared with a year ago, they are far more reluctant to cooperate with the United States government in “gray areas” where there is no explicit requirement for a legal warrant.”
