Smoker’s Widow Awarded $23.6 Billion

A widow who lost her husband to lung cancer stemming from decades of chain-smoking has received a $23.6 billion punitive judgment against cigarette manufacturer RJ Reynolds. Her legal team had argued that the company had been negligent in informing consumers of the dangers of tobacco, making it responsible for her husband’s cancer and resulting death. In addition to the multi-billion-dollar punitive judgment, she was awarded $16.8 million in compensatory damages. RJ Reynolds called the decision “grossly excessive” and plans to appeal.
