When the Lincoln one-cent coin made its initial appearance in 1909, it marked a radical departure from the accepted styling of US coins. No regularly circulating US coin had ever featured a portrait of a real person before, but public sentiment stemming from the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth was strong enough to outweigh tradition.
