All’s Fair in Love and Dating Websites?

Researchers are held to a strict code of ethics when carrying out experiments on human subjects. For example, they are expected to obtain informed consent from participants. Yet, the obligations of websites remain murky, and some are using this to their advantage. On the heels of Facebook‘s revelation that it manipulated users’ feeds to study emotions, dating website OKCupid admitted to carrying out its own experiments, one of which involved falsifying compatibility information to see how it would impact users’ likelihood of initiating communication.
