today’s holiday: Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Father Laval

Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Father Laval

This annual pilgrimage is made by thousands of people of all faiths to the shrine of Roman Catholic priest Père Jacques Désiré Laval in Port Louis, Mauritius. Father Laval came to Mauritius in 1841 and devoted himself to the spiritual improvement of the emancipated slaves until his death in 1864. The pilgrimage is held on the day of his death. It originated on the day Laval was buried, when more than 30,000 weeping people followed his bier as he was taken for burial opposite the Ste. Croix Church. A monument to him is there today, and many masses are celebrated at the shrine on the memorial day. More… Discuss

today’s birthday: Luigi Galvani (1737)

Luigi Galvani (1737)

While experimenting with electricity, Galvani, an Italian physicist and physician, noticed that a frog’s leg contracted when it was touched with charged metal. This observation led him to conclude—incorrectly—that animal tissue generates electricity. His research focused attention on electricity in animals, stimulating the study of electrotherapy and electric currents. Today, many terms in electricity are derived from his name. What noted novel might have been inspired in part by Galvani’s work? More… Discuss

Sibling Bullying Takes Mental Toll

Sibling Bullying Takes Mental Toll

Siblings will inevitably fight, but when one regularly says nasty or hurtful things to or about the other, gets physical with him or her, or consistently ignores him or her, it crosses the line into bullying and can do lasting harm. Eighteen-year-olds who were bullied by a sibling several times a week in childhood were about twice as likely as their peers to have depression, to have anxiety, and to engage in self-harm. It is important, therefore, for parents to understand that bullying can occur in the home just as it can in school and to intervene when they see their children treating each other in a bullying manner. French Roquefort, a famous blue cheese, which is required by European law to be made from raw sheep’s milk. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

One of the best-known of all French cheeses, Roquefort comes from ewe’s milk aged in the caves of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon in the south of France. Though similar cheeses are produced elsewhere, European law dictates that only those cheeses aged in Roquefort-sur-Soulzon’s caves may bear the name “Roquefort.” Distinctive veins of blue mold, found in the caves’ soil, give the cheese its characteristic odor and strong taste of butyric acid. According to legend, how was this mold discovered? More… Discuss
