today’s holiday: Tarantula Fest and Barbecue

Tarantula Fest and Barbecue

In northern California, the tarantula mating season begins in mid-August and lasts through early November, during which time many of the spiders cross the roads at Henry W. Coe State Park. Park rangers view the mass exodus as a great opportunity to hold a festival and a barbecue. The bolder attendees of the festival go for the tarantula-handling. Some even muster the courage to pose for pictures as the spiders crawl on their faces. There are also displays of non-native tarantulas and a raffle, and the park’s visitor center offers more information about tarantulas and the park. More… Discuss

today’s birthday: Buster Keaton (1895) (and great documentary on his life and career)

Buster Keaton (1895)

Though his career had its ups and downs, Keaton is recognized today as one of silent cinema‘s greatest actors and filmmakers. He is remembered as much for his acrobatic skill as for his trademark deadpan expression, both of which he developed performing in vaudeville as a child and honed over the course of his decades-long career on the silver screen, starring in such classics as The General and Steamboat Bill, Jr. How did Joseph Frank Keaton come to be known as Buster? Boris Yeltsin Orders Tanks to Storm Russian Parliament (1993)

As president of an independent Russia, Boris Yeltsin sought to end state control of the economy but clashed with parliament, which was controlled by former Communists. When Yeltsin suspended the parliament, it retaliated by naming Vice President Aleksandr Rutskoi as acting president, and anti-Yeltsin forces barricaded themselves inside the parliament building. The military interceded on Yeltsin’s side and, after a bloody battle, troops recaptured the parliament building. What was the death toll? More… Discuss

Guess what: Caffeinated Clothing Can’t Cut Waistlines (as claimed by deceptive advertising)

Caffeinated Clothing Can’t Cut Waistlines

When it comes to losing weight, there are few shortcuts around eating right and getting regular exercise, but the marketplace is still saturated with quick-fix weight-loss products purporting to magically melt away the pounds. In the US, consumers have spent millions of dollars on caffeine-infused bras, girdles, leggings, and other articles of clothing that manufacturers claimed would break down fat, resulting in weight loss and reduced cellulite. However, there is no scientific evidence to back up these claims, and companies selling these products, under fire from US regulators, have agreed to refund customers who fell for the deceptive advertising. One of the world’s oldest arboretums is the Trsteno Arboretum, near Dubrovnik in Croatia. What arboretum in England helped inspire the design for New York City’s Central Park? More… Discuss
