this pressed: Obama Calls for Better Protocol in US Ebola Cases

President Barack Obama called for immediate steps to ensure the U.S. medical system is ready to follow the proper protocol for treating Ebola patients. Obama spoke Sunday with Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell about the first case of Ebola transmission in the United States. Obama ordered the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to quickly investigate how a nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital contracted the virus. The nurse was part of the team treating the first Ebola patient to be diagnosed in the United States, Thomas Duncan, who died last week.

this pressed: 8 infants test positive for TB at Texas hospital | Fox News

8 infants test positive for TB at Texas hospital | Fox News.

Health screenings reveal that eight infants have tested positive for tuberculosis following the discovery that a nurse’s assistant infected with TB worked at an El Paso hospital’s nursery.

El Paso Public Health Director Robert Resendes said Thursday that of the eight, five babies had been vaccinated previously against TB and their results may be false positives. Preventive medical treatments have been offered for all eight.

None of the babies have active TB, the deadly and contagious form of the disease.

Health authorities also raised to 860 the number of infants possibly exposed at Providence Memorial Hospital. The hospital says it passed the first inspection by federal health authorities and inspectors will return in December.

DALLAS (AP) — A Texas health care worker who was in full protective gear when they provided hospital care for an Ebola patient who later died has tested positive for the virus and is in stable condition, health officials said Sunday. If the preliminary diagnosis is confirmed, it would be the first known case of the disease being contracted or transmitted in the U.S.

Dr. Daniel Varga, of the Texas Health Resources, said during a news conference Sunday that the worker wore a gown, gloves, mask and shield when they provided care to Thomas Eric Duncan during his second visit to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. Varga did not identify the worker and says the family of the worker has “requested total privacy.”

Saint of the Day for Sunday, October 12th, 2014: St. Wilfrid

today’s holiday: White Sunday

White Sunday

Children are honored on this special day celebrated in Christian churches of both American Samoa and the country of Samoa. Each child dresses in white and wears a crown of white frangipani blossoms. They line up and walk to church, carrying banners and singing hymns, while their parents wait for them inside. The children present short dramatizations of Bible stories, such as the good Samaritan, Noah’s ark, and the prodigal son. After the performance is over, the children return to their homes, and their parents serve them a feast that includes roast pig, bananas, taro, coconuts, and cakes. More… Discuss

While visiting Cairo, Egypt, Crowley reportedly had a mystical experience involving a voice that dictated The Book of the Law, the central text of Thelemic religious philosophy. Columbus Makes Landfall in the Caribbean (1492)

Believing that Asia could be reached by traveling westward, Columbus’s three-ship expedition set sail from Palos, Spain, in 1492. After a stop at the Canary Islands, Columbus sailed due west, turning in a more southerly direction after about a month at sea. Shortly thereafter, Columbus quelled a small mutiny, and, on October 12, landed at an island in the Bahamas. Columbus also explored nearby Cuba and Hispaniola before returning to Spain. How many ships set sail with his second expedition? More… Discuss

No Apology, But Acknowledgement of Failings from Facebook

Facebook faced widespread backlash earlier this year, after admitting that it had, without consent, manipulated the news feeds of hundreds of thousands of users in an experiment on human emotion. It has since been several months, and Facebook has apparently ruminated on the matter. While stopping short of apologizing for its actions, the social media giant has acknowledged failings in the way it carried out the research and released the results. More… Discuss

Anna Leonowens

Anna Leonowens

Leonowens was a British teacher who became governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. Her personal diaries became the basis for the Margaret Landon novel Anna and the King of Siam, which in turn inspired the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The King and I. Although Leonowens presented her memoirs as factual, it has been said that she exaggerated the importance of her role in the king’s court. After leaving Siam, Leonowens helped found what college?
