this pressed: Boehner: U.S. is just “poking [ISIS] in the nose”|Info 24.us

Although he said he tries to support President Obama on foreign policy, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio didn’t hold back on criticism of the president’s strategy to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday.

“These are barbarians. And we’re over there kind of poking them in the nose. We’re not really there to defeat and destroy,” Boehner said.

He said the U.S. needs “a robust strategy” to take on the group and that lawmakers should give the president an even broader authorization for military force than he requested last month.

The White House submitted a proposal to Congress in February for legislation that would authorize the president to fight ISIS for three years with no restriction on where U.S. forces can go. It bans “enduring offensive combat operations,” an ambiguous term that seeks to bridge the differences between Democrats who fear another prolonged ground war in the Middle East and Republicans who have urged the administration to do whatever it takes to destroy the group.

“I go out of my way to try to be supportive of the president’s foreign policy, when I think he’s right. When it comes to the issue of ISIS, the president said that he wants to destroy and eliminate ISIS. That’s what he said. That’s what the goal is,” Boehner said. “But then he outlines a strategy that nobody believes will accomplish the mission.”

this pressed: Iraq says launches offensive on Islamic State north of Baghdad | Reuters

(Reuters) – Iraq’s army and Shi’ite militia have launched a long-awaited offensive against Islamic State in Salahuddin province, a stronghold of the radical Islamist fighters north of Baghdad, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Sunday.

The ultra-radical fighters control several strongholds in the mainly Sunni Muslim province of Salahuddin, including Tikrit, hometown of executed former president Saddam Hussein.

They also hold other towns on the Tigris river, north of the government-held city of Samarra which Abadi visited on Sunday.

“The prime minister and armed forces chief … announce the start of the security campaign to liberate Salahuddin,” a statement issued by Abadi’s office said as he met military leaders in the province, where thousands of troops and militia have gathered for battle.

In comments broadcast on Iraqi television, Abadi said the Islamist militants would be pushed out of all of Salahuddin and offered their supporters a final opportunity to hand themselves in. “I call upon all those who have been deluded and made mistakes in past to lay down arms today,” he said.

“This is their last chance. If they insist on staying on their wrong path they will receive the fair punishment they deserve because they … stood with terrorism.”

Thousands of troops and fighters from Shi’ite militias known as Hashid Shaabi (Popular Mobilization) have been mobilized for the campaign against Islamic State in Salahuddin.

Netanyahu on ‘Historic Mission’ to Stop Iran Nuclear Deal

VOA News    (read more HERE)

Last updated on: March 01, 2015 12:41 PM

Two days ahead of a controversial speech in Washington by Israel’s prime minister, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is attempting to shore up the countries’ relationship amid diplomatic friction.

“The prime minister of Israel is welcome to speak in the United States, obviously, and we have a closer relationship with Israel right now in terms of security than in any time in history,” Kerry told ABC television’s This Week program.

Before leaving for Washington on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was on a “historic mission” to try to stop a nuclear deal with Iran.

Netanyahu is expected to address lawmakers in Washington on Tuesday.

Break with tradition

He surprised Washington earlier this year by announcing a visit at the invitation of Speaker of the House John Boehner, breaking with historical protocol of coordinating with the White House.

The invitation by Republicans in Congress has divided Americans.

this pressed for relevance: U.S.-backed Syria rebel group dissolves itself after losses

BEIRUT (Reuters) – One of the main western-backed rebel groups announced on Sunday that it had dissolved itself and joined a larger Islamist alliance, weeks into a battle which saw it lose ground and men to more powerful al Qaeda insurgents.

Hazzm is one of the last remnants of non-jihadist opposition to President Bashar al-Assad in northern Syria, much of which has been seized by the Nusra Front and Islamic State, an offshoot of al Qaeda that controls roughly a third of Syria.

The statement posted online said its fighters would join the Shamiyah Front, an alliance of Islamist brigades in Aleppo, to prevent further bloodshed.

The decision comes after heavy weekend fighting between it and the Nusra Front, al Qaeda’s official Syria wing. Both Hazzm, which is part of the Free Syria Army collection of mainstream rebel groups, and Nusra fight the government.

Hazzm has received what it describes as small amounts of military aid from foreign states opposed to Assad, including U.S.-made anti-tank missiles. But it has lost ground to better armed and financed jihadists.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry pressed the case on Sunday for completing nuclear diplomacy with Iran despite Israeli opposition, saying the United States deserves the benefit of the doubt on getting a deal that would prevent any need for military action to curb Tehran’s atomic ambitions.

Two days before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to address the U.S. Congress to warn against an Iran deal, Kerry delivered a stout defense of talks that are entering a critical phase with a key March 31 deadline looming.

Kerry said he hoped Netanyahu’s speech does not turn into “some great political football” but said the Israeli leader is “welcome to speak in the United States, obviously.”

Although the Land Romanian Prince Vlad struggled to keep good relations with neighbors understanding not permitted to not show the proper respect as a country, be it even a small country – it was Wallachia.

The Royal Court of the Romanian Country came messengers from Muhammad, the Turkish sultan. As soon as they entered the great hall for receiving visitors they made deep bows, as was customary at them, but have not found the ends, but remained with turbans on the head. Wallachian ruler asked him, without to hide his displeasure:

– Why do it? Do not you know that you are the ruler of this country before?

Messages Turks and discoveries not yet ends:

– That’s the custom in our country, My Lord; and it keeps our master.

When Vlad Tepes heart no longer endure reproach and raised his hand as a command:

– If you suffer from Sultan shame you’re sitting in front of his head covered, so we are not accustomed. Anyway, go and talk to no longer send his habits to other rulers who showed no desire that he would like to have time to împământească to them. I, however, if you do not receive the law does not mean that you stumble while trying to keep. Ba, on the contrary: my desire is to support and strengthen your law, to hold jealously; so that the command is to catch you head turbans.

With iron nails have been beaten turbans in scalp …

Then Vlad Tepes messengers gave way to go to tell the Sultan as each generation must preserve customs, traditions, but not to impose on others, be they even their subjects.

COSTING AMERICANS? Student aid for illegal immigrants stirs debate

FILE: May 1, 2013: A Dream Act supporter carries a sign during the International Workers Day and Immigration Reform March in Los Angeles, Calif. (REUTERS)

Several U.S. colleges are giving financial aid directly to students who are young illegal immigrants, extending the debate about helping people in the United States illegally at the expense of Americans who are in need of similar opportunities.

Such opportunities have opened up since President Obama’s 2012 executive action that deferred deportation to millions of young people brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents. However, they still are largely ineligible for state or federal student aid.

New York University — which receives federal, state and city money — says the aid given to illegal immigrants is not at the expense of American students.

Whuppity Scoorie (2015)

On March 1 every year, Lanark‘s parish church bell rings exactly at 6 p.m., after a four-month silence. As the bell begins to ring, children in this Scottish town parade three times round the church, dangling pieces of string with paper balls attached at the other end. Then they start striking one another with the paper balls in a play fight. Once pennies are tossed to the ground, the children rush to collect them. One explanation for the origin of this festival is that it can be traced back to pagan times, when people believed that making a great deal of noise would scare away evil spirits. More… Discuss

Viewed by many to be the result of a period of factional infighting and religious hysteria, the witch trials of Puritanical Salem Village, Massachusetts, led to the executions of 20 people—15 women and five men—and the imprisonment of approximately 150 accused witches.
