The devil moves in with stealth and charm, but then ‘starts giving the orders,’ Pope warns – Living Faith – Home & Family – News – Catholic Online

Pope Francis, speaking at Mass Friday morning, warned the faithful about the ways of Satan. “The evil one conceals himself, and comes with his very polite friends, knocking at the door, asking permission, but then moves in and spends time with the man and, little by little, starts giving the orders.”

Speaking at his Saint Martha residence, the Pope said that in the spiritual life “temptations always return, the evil spirit never gets tired.” If the devil has been kicked out once, he is patient, waiting to return, and “If you let him in, you fall into a worse situation.” Pope Francis warned that the devil has “good manners,” ultimately making the person fall into moral relativism, calming his conscience. We start saying things like “This happens everywhere” and “We are all sinners,” Francis said. Yet “When we say everybody, we mean nobody,” he said. “And so we live this worldliness that is the child of the evil spirit. “Calming the conscience, numbing the conscience, this is a great evil,” he said.

today’s holiday: Kenka Matsuri

Kenka Matsuri

The Kenka Matsuri (Roughhouse Festival) takes place October 14-15 in Shirahama, Japan, and thousands flock to the shrine where the festival is held. The roughhousing starts as teams of mikoshi-bearers jostle each other for position in the procession to the Matsubara Hachiman Shrine. Once they reach the shrine, they spin their heavy burden, raise it up high in the air and let it crash to the ground—difficult maneuvers designed to thrill the crowd. The mikoshi engage in a final battle in an open field, where thousands of cheering spectators take sides and and egg them on. More… Discuss

The program is still syndicated today. What word was once prohibited from being used on I Love Lucy? More… Discuss

The Incandescent Light Bulb

The Incandescent Light Bulb

Now the iconic symbol for an idea, the electric incandescent light bulb was independently produced in the late 1870s by Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison—and perhaps earlier by others. However, Edison has received the major credit for this invention because he also developed the power lines and other equipment needed for a lighting system. Financed by the likes of J.P. Morgan and the Vanderbilts, Edison achieved success using a carbon filament in his design. How do incandescent light bulbs work? More… Discuss
