Saint of the Day for Tuesday, December 1st, 2015: St. Eligius

today’s holiday: 1 Decembrie Ziua Nationala Romaniei

Romania Mare

Uploaded on Jan 25, 2009

Hai să dăm mână cu mână
Cei cu inima română,
Să-nvârtim hora frăţiei
Pe pământul României!

Iarba rea din holde piară!
Piară duşmănia-n ţară!
Între noi să nu mai fie
Decât flori şi armonie!

Măi muntene, măi vecine
Vină să te prinzi cu mine
Şi la viaţă cu unire
Şi la moarte cu-nfrăţire!

Unde-i unul nu-i putere
La nevoi şi la durere
Unde-s doi puterea creşte
Şi duşmanul nu sporeşte!

Amândoi suntem de-o mamă
De-o făptură şi de-o samă,
Ca doi brazi într-o tulpină
Ca doi ochi într-o lumină.

Amândoi avem un nume,
Amândoi o soartă-n lume.
Eu ţi-s frate, tu mi-eşti frate,
În noi doi un suflet bate!

Vin la Milcov cu grăbire
Să-l secăm dintr-o sorbire,
Ca să treacă drumul mare
Peste-a noastre vechi hotare,

Şi să vadă Sfântul Soare
Într-o zi de sărbătoare
Hora noastră cea frăţească
Pe câmpia românească!

And Love to all men ‘neath the sun!

Our Lady of the Angels School Fire (1958)

Shortly before classes were dismissed on December 1, 1958, a fire broke out at the foot of a stairway in the Our Lady of the Angels School in Chicago, Illinois. A total of 92 students and 3 nuns died and another 100 were seriously injured when smoke, heat, and fire cut off their normal means of escape. Many perished jumping from second-floor windows. The tragedy dominated headlines and led to nationwide changes to school fire safety regulations. How is the fire thought to have started? More… Discuss

Veneration of pictures and statues symbolizing sacred figures and biblical events was an early feature of Christian worship. Iconoclasts were opposed to the use of such religious images and destroyed them, claiming that they violated the second commandment not to make or worship “graven images.” An iconoclastic movement developed during the Byzantine Empire, and it was characterized by fierce persecution of those who made and venerated icons. What are a few modern examples of iconoclasm? More… Discuss
