THE PREFACE

The artist is the creator of beautiful things. To reveal art and conceal the artist is art’s aim. The critic is he who can translate into another manner or a new material his impression of beautiful things.

Today’s Holiday:Bonfim Festival (Festa do Bonfim)

Today’s Holiday:
Bonfim Festival (Festa do Bonfim)

There is a church in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, known as Our Lord of the Happy Ending (bonfim). Today during the Bonfim Festival, hundreds of Brazilian women dress in the traditional white dresses of colonial Bahia and form a procession to the church. The bahianas balance jars of water, scented with blossoms, on their heads. The washing of the steps at Bonfim Basilica on the second Thursday after Epiphany is the highlight of the festival.: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tfd.mobile.TfdSearch

Today’s Holiday:Feast of Our Lady of Altagracia (Dominican Republic)

Today’s Holiday:
Feast of Our Lady of Altagracia (Dominican Republic)

A cloth painting of the Virgin Mary is the focus of a yearly celebration in the Dominican Republic. It was painted by a Spanish artist and brought to the island nation in the early 1500s. The portrait, crowned by a gold and silver tiara by Pope John Paul II in 1978, is located in a basilica in the city of Higuey, in the Altagracia province. Every year on January 21, thousands of pilgrims visit the Higuey cathedral to worship. The feast day is a national holiday; it is marked by all-night church services, singing, dancing, and festivals in many Dominican towns.: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tfd.mobile.TfdSearch

Today’s Birthday:John Bodkin Adams (1899)

Today’s Birthday:
John Bodkin Adams (1899)

Adams was an Irish-born British physician suspected of having been a serial killer. Between 1946 and 1956, more than 160 of his patients, many of them elderly, died under suspicious circumstances—most leaving him money or items in their wills. He was tried for the murder of one patient but was acquitted. He was later convicted of other crimes, but never murder. A 2000 article in the British Medical Journal suggests that Adams may have been the role model for what other serial-killer doctor?: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tfd.mobile.TfdSearch

This Day in History:Louis XVI of France Is Guillotined (1793)

This Day in History:
Louis XVI of France Is Guillotined (1793)

Louis XVI was the king of France during the complex sociopolitical conflict that culminated in the French Revolution, but he was shy, dull, and corpulent and lacked the leadership skills necessary for the job. During the revolution, he was caught attempting to flee the Tuileries palace in disguise, and when proof of his counterrevolutionary actions emerged, he was tried for treason and beheaded. It is said that while his blood dripped to the ground, many in the crowd ran forward to do what?: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tfd.mobile.TfdSearch

Quote of the Day:
Wilkie Collins

One of our first amusements as children (if we have any imagination at all) is to get out of our own characters, and to try the characters of other personages as a change—to be fairies, to be queens, to be anything, in short, but what we really are.: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tfd.mobile.TfdSearch

Article of the Day:
Bouncing Betty

The German S-mine, nicknamed the “bouncing betty” by US troops during World War II, is the best-known example of a bounding mine. These land mines are designed to attack unshielded infantry by launching into the air, exploding at waist-height, and propelling shrapnel outward at lethal speeds. One of the definitive weapons of the war, the S-mine often maimed rather than killed its victims and was one of the most feared devices encountered by Allied troops. What did French soldiers dub the S-mine?: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tfd.mobile.TfdSearch
