Today’s Holiday: Guatemala Independence Day

Today’s Holiday:
Guatemala Independence Day

This is the day on which Guatemala won its independence from Spain in 1821. It is a public holiday during which the buildings in Guatemala City are draped in blue-and-white bunting, and there are parades with schoolchildren marching to the music of military bands. A popular holiday pastime is watching La Conquista (The Conquest), a traditional dance where the dancers, in wooden masks and red wigs, reenact the conquest of the Mayan Indians by the Spanish soldier Pedro de Alvarado. Today’s Birthday: William Howard Taft (1857)

Today’s Birthday:

Supplementary decrees laid down the criteria for determining exactly who was legally Jewish. Punishments for violating the laws included fines, hard labor, and even death. Three years after the laws were announced, another law required Jews to adopt what middle names? More…: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tfd.mobile.TfdSearch

Article of the Day: The Lost Land of Lemuria

Article of the Day:
The Lost Land of Lemuria

Puzzled by the presence of lemur fossils in Madagascar and India—but not in Africa or the Middle East—19th-century geologist Philip Sclater theorized that the two land masses containing the fossils had once been part of a larger, now mostly submerged continent, which he named “Lemuria.” Following the scientific community’s acceptance of the theories of plate tectonics and continental drift, however, Sclater’s theory was widely dismissed. What is one example of an actual sunken continent? More…: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tfd.mobile.TfdSearch
