Painting of the Exhibition: ‘Paintings and Drawings by Vincent van Gogh’ – Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. July – August 1905
Organized and funded by JOHANNA VAN GOGH-BONGER, aided by Willem Steenhoff, curator of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
Compiled from pages 296-303, ‘Vincent van Gogh: The Years in France: Complete Paintings 1886–1890’ by Walter Feilchenfeldt (2013) http://amzn.to/2uUzAI3

During his five-day stay at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, from May 30 or 31 to June 4 or 5 1888, Van Gogh made two paintings and seven drawings.

The present canvas was made no sooner did he arrive in Arles and after the drawing which he had made on the spot [F1428] (Private collection; see drawing http://bit.ly/2qyK8u0).
It was sent to Theo on 13 August 1888 http://bit.ly/2a5T2TF

“… Now that I’ve seen the sea here I really feel the importance there is in staying in the south and feeling — if the colour has to be even more exaggerated — Africa not far away from one.
I’m sending you by same post some drawings of Saintes-Maries. I did the drawing of the boats as I was leaving, very early in the morning, and I’m working on the painting, a no. 30 canvas (Van Gogh actually meant no. 25 canvas; the present work) with more sea and sky on the right.
It was before the boats cleared off; I’d watched it all the other mornings, but as they leave very early, hadn’t had time to do it.

(…) About staying in the south, even if it’s more expensive — Look, we love Japanese painting, we’ve experienced its influence — all the Impressionists have that in common — and we wouldn’t go to Japan, in other words, to what is the equivalent of Japan, the south? So I believe that the future of the new art still lies in the south after all.

(…) I’d like you to spend some time here, you’d feel it — after some time your vision changes, you see with a more Japanese eye, you feel colour differently. I’m also convinced that it’s precisely through a long stay here that I’ll bring out my personality. The Japanese draws quickly, very quickly, like a flash of lightning, because his nerves are finer, his feeling simpler. I’ve been here only a few months but — tell me, in Paris would I have drawn in an hour the drawing of the boats? Not even with the frame.” – To Theo. Arles, 5 June 1888 http://bit.ly/2fH7aJ0

About the painting:
“Can you see why these fishermen’s boats appear slightly unreal? Compared to the irregular surface of the sandy beach, they’ve been painted in an overly two-dimensional way. The boats are made up of areas of uniform colour within strong outlines. Furthermore, the boats don’t cast shadows on the beach. These stylistic elements were familiar to Van Gogh from his collection of Japanese prints.

Van Gogh would have preferred to make this painting on the beach, but he couldn’t, because the fishermen put out to sea very early every morning. He did draw the boats there, however, and later made this painting at home.” – See more at http://bit.ly/29b2hFV

– a murit Parintele Ilarion Felea!

In Aiud eru fete inalte din alte confesiuni dar nimeni nu avea popularitatea: parintelui Staniloae, a ieromonahului Anania si a parintelui Ilarion Felea, toti fiind in Aiud la ora aceea.

Cand moare cineva afara, vin toti cei dragi si-l petrec dupa toata randuiala crestineasca.

Oamenii, respective noi detinutii, am urmarit mersul bolnavului pana a inchis ochii.

– Dumnezeu sa-l ierte, in veci sa fie pomenirea lui!
