Mi-a dat ┼či c├óteva nume.

Today’s Holiday: Joust of the Saracens (La Giostra del Saracino)

Today’s Holiday:
Joust of the Saracens (La Giostra del Saracino)

The most famous of the Italian jousting festivals, La Giostra del Saracino originated during the Crusades (11th-13th centuries), when it was used as propaganda to support the fight to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims. Eight knights representing the four quarters of Arezzo, where the festival takes place, march to the piazza, where an effigy of a Moor or Saracen has been set up. The effigy is armed with a heavy flail, and the knights must try to hit it in the center with their lances without being touched by the flail. The winner is rewarded with a golden lance on behalf of his district. More…: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tfd.mobile.TfdSearch

Florence Ballard (1943)

A founding member of The Supremes, Ballard sang on 16 Top 40 hit singles. She was first recruited by future members of The Temptations for a sister group they were forming. Ballard in turn recruited Mary Wilson, whom she had met at a talent show, and Wilson brought in Diana Ross. Disputes over Ballard’s role in the trio led Motown Records to release her from the group in 1967, reportedly for “exhaustion.” Her solo career failed, and she died in 1976 at age 32 as a result of what? Mysterious Beast of G├ęvaudan Kills Its First Victim (1764)

From 1764 to 1767, the people of G├ęvaudan, France, reported dozens of sightings of a man-eating, wolf-like creature now known as the Beast of G├ęvaudan. According to many accounts, the beastÔÇöconsistently described as having large teeth and an immense tailÔÇökilled some 100 people, prompting King Louis XV to send hunters to slay it. Some stories say a local hunter shot the beast, possibly with silver bullets. What mythical creature did some suggest was behind the attacks? Gospel of the Day (Matthew 8:5-17)

Gospel of the Day (Matthew 8:5-17)

When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him and appealed to him,
saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully.”
He said to him, “I will come and cure him.”
The centurion said in reply, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed.
For I too am a person subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith.
I say to you, many will come from the east and the west, and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the banquet in the kingdom of heaven.”
but the children of the kingdom will be driven out into the outer darkness, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”
And Jesus said to the centurion, “You may go; as you have believed, let it be done for you.” And at that very hour (his) servant was healed.
Jesus entered the house of Peter, and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.
He touched her hand, the fever left her, and she rose and waited on him.
When it was evening, they brought him many who were possessed by demons, and he drove out the spirits by a word and cured all the sick,
to fulfill what had been said by Isaiah the prophet: “He took away our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

Police warn about fentanyl-laced flyers after deputy hospitalized for touching paper

ALEX LASKER, AOL.COM
Jun 27th 2018 1:13PM

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning on Tuesday after a flyer laced with the opioid fentanyl put one of its deputies in the hospital.

The deputy in question exited a sheriff’s office facility in Houston, Texas, and found a flyer on her windshield, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a press briefing.

She removed the paper and began to drive away before starting to feel lightheaded. The employee was taken to the hospital following the incident and is reportedly alert and in stable condition.

The department launched a follow-up investigation and examined between 15 and 20 of the same flyers placed on nearby vehicles. It found that at least one of the papers tested positive for fentanyl, a powerful opioid 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine.

According to CNN, a dose as small as a 0.25 milligrams can kill a person.

Gonzalez said that his deputies are on high alert as it remains unclear if the flyers were intended specifically to target law enforcement or if they were placed near the police department randomly.

A photo of the flyers shared on Twitter reveals that they contained anti-government and police messages.

“Fentanyl can be very toxic,” said Gonzalez. “Even small amounts embedded in a flyer, in a paper, is something that could cause symptoms and many times, had this sergeant not acted quickly and gotten help, many times, it can end up deadly.”

Today’s Holiday: Mnarja

Today’s Holiday:
Mnarja

Mnarja is the principal folk festival of Malta and a public holiday there, thought to have been originally a harvest festival. It is held in Buskett Gardens, a park with extensive vineyards and orange and lemon orchards not far from Mdina, Malta’s medieval capital. Festivities begin on the eve of Mnarja with an agricultural show that continues through the next morning and folk-singing and folk-music competitions. The traditional food of the evening is fried rabbit. On the following day, bareback horse and donkey races bring the feast to an end. Today’s Birthday:
Ludwig August Theodor Beck (1880)

A German general, Beck saw the Nazis’ rise to power as “the first ray of hope since 1918.” However, he soon feared that Germany was not militarily prepared for an attack on Czechoslovakia. He voiced concern to Adolf Hitler directly, and, in 1938, he resigned in protest against the planned attack but was largely ignored. Beck then became a key member of the conspiracy to overthrow Hitler. What happened to Beck after his plan failed to kill Hitler with a bomb on July 20, 1944? The Battle of Megiddo

The Battle of Megiddo was fought around 1468 BCE between Egyptian forces under the command of Pharaoh Thutmose III and a Canaanite coalition that was ultimately defeated. It is the first battle in history known to have been recorded in relatively reliable detail. Because of Megiddo’s strategic location at the crossing of military and trade routes, it has since been the scene of many other battles. US says another American suffers illness at its Cuba embassy

WASHINGTON, June 28 (Reuters) – The U.S. State Department said another person had been affected by health problems at the U.S. Embassy in Cuba, bringing to 26 the number of Americans who have suffered mysterious maladies in that country.

The latest case and another confirmed on June 21 were found to involve health effects similar to those reported by other members of the U.S. Havana diplomatic community and were the first since August 2017, the department said in a statement.

U.S. experts have yet to determine who or what was behind the mysterious illnesses, which began in late 2016. Cuban officials, who are conducting their own investigation, have denied any involvement or any knowledge of what was behind it.

The State Department statement said the two cases confirmed this month “result from a single occurrence in late May in a diplomatic residence in which both officers were present.” They raised the number of Americans affected to 26, it said.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, which has partly rolled back a detente with Cuba, first charged diplomats were the victims of “sonic attacks” and Cuba as the host country was at a minimum responsible for their safety.

Washington last year sharply reduced U.S. Embassy staff in Havana and in October expelled 15 Cuban diplomats.

Symptoms suffered by those affected have included hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, headaches and fatigue, a pattern consistent with “mild traumatic brain injury,” State Department officials have said.

In April, Canada said it would remove families of diplomats posted at its embassy in Cuba as information from medical specialists had raised concerns of a new type of brain injury.

The U.S. State Department said this month it had brought a group of diplomats home from Guangzhou, China, over concerns they were suffering from a malady that resembles a brain injury. (Reporting by Doina Chiacu Writing by Eric Walsh Editing by Chizu Nomiyama and Susan Thomas)

Anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion

The Stonewall Inn was a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village that was raided by the police on June 28, 1969. As the outraged crowd threw stones and bottles, more police arrived and subdued what had turned into a riot. Today, the event is regarded as a turning point in the history of the gay rights movement. It is commemorated in New York, Philadelphia, and other U.S. cities with parades, memorial services for those who have died of AIDS, and other activities to draw attention to the ways in which homosexuals have been discriminated against. 2018 primaries: Key takeaways as Democrats get a shock and Trump triumphs

HERB JACKSON | USA TODAY | 13 hours ago

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old who’s never held elected office, ousted New York City Congressman Joe Crowley. Crowley had been considered a candidate to become House speaker if Democrats win the majority in November. (June 27)

Tuesday’s primaries showed even top party leaders can’t take support from their home turf for granted, and while it helps to have President Donald Trump on your side if you’re running as a Republican, having a record of bucking him isn’t fatal.

Elections were held Tuesday in Colorado, Maryland, New York, Oklahoma and Utah, and voters in runoff elections picked nominees in Mississippi and South Carolina. Here are the key takeaways:

Progressive challenger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez celebrates with supporters at a victory party in the Bronx after upsetting incumbent Democratic Representative Joseph Crowly on June 26, 2018 in New York City.

Kellyanne Conway: Trump was big winner of primaryÔÇŽ:

Nobody’s safe
She raised $300,000 to her opponent’s $3.3 million, but it was enough for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s first run for office in a New York City district covering parts of Queens and the Bronx to defeat 10-term Rep. Joe Crowley and send shock waves through the House Democratic caucus.

President Trump crowed about the loss by Crowley, a sometimes bombastic critic of the president who was seen as angling to replace California Rep. Nancy Pelosi as the Democrats’ leader in the next Congress.

Trump said on Twitter that maybe Crowley would have won if he had been “nicer, and more respectful, to his President.”

The Bronx-born Ocasio-Cortez, 28, was the first primary challenger Crowley had faced in 14 years. Her win comes as Democratic primaries around the country have seen scraps between the party’s progressive wing and the Washington establishment.

ÔÇťWe meet a machine with a movement, and that is what we have done today,ÔÇŁ Ocasio-Cortez said Tuesday night, according to The Associated Press. ÔÇťWorking-class Americans want a clear champion and there is nothing radical about moral clarity in 2018.ÔÇŁ

Ezra Levin, co-executive director of the Indivisible Project that supported Ocasio-Cortez, compared her win to the 2014 primary in which House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., was beaten by David Brat, a challenger propelled by the tea party movement.

“A new political era is dawning ÔÇö and the rusting and reluctant political establishment will wake up or be woken,” Levin said.

Pelosi said Crowley brought “principled, unifiying and forward-looking leadership” to the party’s response to Trump and said the caucus “has been strengthened by his chairmanship.”

Trump effect continues
Trump made it clear to supporters when he flew through a thunderstorm Monday night to lead a rally for Gov. Henry McMaster that if the governor was not nominated for another term, the “fake news” would take it out on Trump. South Carolina came through for the president, giving McMaster a win in a runoff against businessman John Warren.

Trump also endorsed New York Rep. Dan Donovan, who won his primary on Tuesday by defeating former Rep. Michael Grimm, who resigned in 2015 before pleading guilty to tax fraud and serving seven months in prison.

McMaster ÔÇö whose support for Trump goes back to January 2016 ÔÇö was in a runoff because in the June 5 primary he came up 8 points short of garnering the 50 percent-plus-one votes he needed to secure the nomination outright. Warren finished the primary with 28 percent and then was endorsed by two other candidates who had split most of the rest of the anti-McMaster vote.

With 97 percent of the vote in, unofficial results showed McMaster leading 53 percent to 47 percent.

In that same June 5 primary, South Carolina Republican Rep. Mark Sanford, a former governor who had been critical of Trump, lost by 4 percentage points after a last-minute Tweet from Trump endorsed his opponent and said Sanford “has been very unhelpful to me” and “nothing but trouble.”

Warren told voters he was more like Trump than McMaster, arguing that like the president he was “anti-establishment” and “anti-politician.”

Trump won South Carolina by 14 points in 2016 and endorsed McMaster back in October. Since the primary, the administration has doubled down on its efforts, with Vice President Mike Pence campaigning there on Saturday and Trump holding a rally Monday night. The president also sent out another tweet on Tuesday telling voters McMaster “WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”

Trump has had a mixed record in the primaries and special elections since he took office. He was embarrassed when Republicans in Alabama did not nominate the appointed senator he was backing, Luther Strange, setting up a race in which Democrat Doug Jones defeated Republican Roy Moore. But Trump also traveled to West Virginia to appear with two candidates vying for the Senate nomination against a third he opposed, Don Blankenship, and Blankenship lost that race.

GOP is having an identity battle
While Crowley’s loss was another sign of Democratic battles with their left wing, Republicans have similar conflicts with groups on the right.

The Club for Growth, a low-tax small-government group that frequently spars with House and Senate leaders, was spending money in primaries attacking candidates who were being attacked themselves by the Congressional Leadership Alliance, a “dark money” group that the Club for Growth says is tied to Speaker Paul Ryan and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

One example was the 4th District in South Carolina, where Rep. Trey Gowdy is retiring. The Club for Growth backed former state Sen. Lee Bright, so it spent more than $418,000 against his opponent, state Sen. William Timmons. CLF, meanwhile, spent more than $345,000 against Bright.

At a candidate forum hosted by The Greenville News, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, Timmons warned that if Bright were elected, “he is going to be on the front page of papers all over this planet.

ÔÇťBusinesses are not going to come here,” Timmons said. “He is going to say things that yÔÇÖall do not agree with. He is going to say things that embarrass you, and it is going to cause problems for the Upstate.ÔÇŁ

Can Democrats mend fences?

Numerous Democratic primaries for House seats, some in districts where the party believes the Republican incumbent is vulnerable in November, saw campaigns where liberal groups and the party’s establishment backed opposing candidates.

There were wins for both sides on Tuesday. The big question they face going forward is whether they can unite after the primary.

In Colorado’s 6th District, Democrats have their sights on Republican Rep. Mike Coffman, who won in 2016 even as Hillary Clinton won by 9 percentage points in the district. He’ll face Iraq veteran Jason Crow, whose support from Washington leaders became a rallying cry for the left after an opponent, Levi Tillemann, released a secret recording he made of House Minority Leader Steny Hoyer asking him to get out of the race.

But the forces on the left had a victory in New York’s 24th, where Republican Rep. John Katko won two years ago even as Clinton beat Trump by 4 points. Syracuse University professor Dana Balter was the candidate backed by progressive groups and local party leaders and won the primary against Juanita Perez Williams, who was getting help from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Pointing to Balter’s win and Ocasio-Cortez’s defeat of Crowley, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee issued a statement saying New York’s elections showed there is a “battle for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party.”

“The best way to excite voters is to run bold, progressive, younger, more diverse candidates who connect with their constituents ÔÇö not old school candidates running establishment campaigns or who are fueled by corporate money,” the PCCC said.

Crossing Trump not always fatal
Elections on Tuesday also showed that criticizing Trump or opposing his policies is not always fatal in Republican primaries.

Larry Hogan, the Republican governor of heavily Democratic Maryland charted a careful course with Trump, speaking out against him at times, most recently when he pulled back state National Guard personnel to protest the “no tolerance” policy at the border that led to the separation of thousands of migrant children from their families.

Despite that, Hogan was nominated without a primary challenger Tuesday.

And Mitt Romney, the 2012 presidential nominee, was nominated for U.S. Senate in Utah despite being a leading voice of the “never Trump” effort in the GOP in June 2016 and saying Trump “caused racists to rejoice” by saying there was blame “on both sides” for violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, last summer.

In an op-ed in the Salt Lake Tribune over the weekend, Romney said he would “support the president’s policies when I believe they are in the best interest of Utah and the nation” but “will continue to speak out when the president says or does something which I believe is divisive, racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, dishonest or destructive to democratic institutions.”

Today’s Holiday: Martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith

Today’s Holiday:
Martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, also known as Mormons, commemorate the day on which their founder, Joseph Smith, and his brother, Hyrum, were murdered in the city jail in Carthage, Illinois, in 1844. Joseph had announced his candidacy for presidency earlier that year; as the mayor of Nauvoo, IL, Smith saw to it that the press used to print the opposition newspaper was destroyed. Threats of mob violence followed, and Smith and his brother were jailed for treason. A mob of men stormed the jail on June 27 and killed them, thus elevating them to the status of martyrs.
