Today’s Holiday: Fiesta of San Juan de Dios

Today’s Holiday:
Fiesta of San Juan de Dios

San Juan de Dios (St. John of God) was born in Portugal in 1495. A religious order, the Brothers Hospitallers, was founded in his honor, and thereafter he was known as John of God and the patron saint of hospitals. In Puno, Peru, San Juan de Dios is celebrated with a two-day fiesta. On March 7, llamas bring in wood for bonfires in a parade with flute and drum music, and in the evening bonfires blaze. The next day, his feast day, a procession takes the saint’s image through the streets of Puno, and dancers and musicians create a festive atmosphere around the church. Pieter Cornelis “Piet” Mondrian (1872)

Mondrian was a Dutch painter whose work foreshadowed the rise of abstract art in the 1940s and 1950s. He went to Paris in 1910 where he developed his geometric, nonobjective style, which he called neoplasticism. It is characterized by the elimination of sensuality from artwork and the restriction of pictorial language to its most basic elements—the straight line, primary colors, and the neutrals of black, white, and gray. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc. was a landmark US Supreme Court case on intellectual property in which the court reviewed whether a parody of Roy Orbison’s song, “Oh, Pretty Woman,” by a rap group violated the Copyright Act of 1976. The court of appeals held that the parody did not constitute fair use, but the Supreme Court disagreed, holding that the commercial character of the song did not create a presumption that the parody violated fair use. A shock wave is created when a powerful explosion within a fluid forms a zone of extremely high pressure that propagates through the fluid faster than the speed of sound. Entierro de la Sardina (Burial of the Sardine)

The custom of burying a “sardine” on Ash Wednesday is common throughout Spain and is thought to have originated in an old fertility custom symbolizing the burial of winter in early spring. The Entierro de la Sardina also symbolizes the burial of worldly pleasures and serves as a reminder that people must abstain from eating meat on Fridays throughout the 40 days of Lent.
