Bizet orchestrated five of these (Nos. 6, 3, 2, 11, 12) as the Petite Suite. The remaining movements were later orchestrated by Roy Douglas andHershy Kay and the complete orchestral suite has been recorded.[1]

Sigfrid Karg-Elert wrote his orchestral suite after Bizet’s Jeux d’enfants, Op. 21, in 1902.[2]

In 1955, George Balanchine choreographed the entire suite as the ballet Jeux d’enfants. In 1975 he made a new ballet, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, using only four of the movements.

Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy – Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64 ( one of the most romantic violin concertos ever! Once you hear the theme…it will stay with you forever!)

Felix Froschhammer, violin

Alexander Mayer, conductor
Ensemble Symphonique Neuchâtel

11.11.2012, Temple du Bas, Neuchâtel

The concerto consists of three movements with the following tempo markings:

  1. Allegro molto appassionato (E minor)
  2. Andante (C major)
  3. Allegretto non troppo – Allegro molto vivace (E major)

The concerto opens with an almost immediate entry of the solo violin, instead of an orchestral tutti, with the very tune in E minor that gave Mendelssohn no peace.[12] Following a bravura of rapidly descending notes, the opening theme is then restated by the orchestra. Continue reading

Dvorak: Legends Op. 59 (Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, David Zinman conductor)

A set of 10 rather light but very evocative orchestral pieces. They were originally written for piano duets and orchestrated a few months later. I enjoy the original version too, but I think the orchestra’s wider range of tone color do enhance the pieces quite a lot.
