The daughter of Emperor Alexius I of Byzantium, Anna plotted, both during and after her father’s reign, against her brother, John II, in the hopes of placing her husband on the throne. After the plot failed, the princess retired to a convent, where she proceeded to pen a biography of her father, the Alexiad, that is recognized today as one of the outstanding Greek historical works of the Middle Ages. Chulalongkorn Day

Chulalongkorn Day is a national holiday in Thailand commemorating King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), the king who abolished slavery and introduced numerous reforms when the country was still called Siam. He succeeded to the throne in 1868 when he was 15 years old, was crowned in 1873, and ruled until his death in 1910. He had been a pupil of Anna Leonowens, who taught the young prince about Abraham Lincoln. The story of her stay in the royal court, and her teaching of the royal children and concubines, was told in Margaret Landon‘s book, Anna and the King of Siam. More… Discuss

Anna Leonowens

Leonowens was a British teacher who became governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. Her personal diaries became the basis for the Margaret Landon novel Anna and the King of Siam, which in turn inspired the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The King and I. Although Leonowens presented her memoirs as factual, it has been said that she exaggerated the importance of her role in the king’s court. After leaving Siam, Leonowens helped found what college?
