Explorers Ellsworth and Hollick-Kenyon Rescued
American explorer Lincoln Ellsworth and Canadian pilot Herbert Hollick-Kenyon were rescued by the research ship Discovery II on January 14, 1936. The pair had made the first flight across Antarctica, 2,300 miles from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea, landed when their plane’s engine faltered, and waited in the previously constructed shelter at Little America for a month to be picked up. After his earlier attempts to cross Antarctica failed, Ellsworth (at right) set out with Hollick-Kenyon in the monoplane Polar Star (seen in the background) and succeeded. Part of the area that Ellsworth and Hollick-Kenyon flew over in 1935 has been named the Ellsworth Highlands.

News: “ICE” BENEATH THE ICE?
“Ice” Beneath the Ice?
Researchers have found deposits of kimberlite, a type of rock that frequently contains diamonds, in Antarctica, suggesting that the ice-covered continent could be hiding considerable riches. Environmentalists need not worry yet about diamond seekers, though; a 1991 treaty banned mining in Antarctica for 50 years, and many experts expect the ban to be extended when it expires in 2041. Some, however, are concerned that the recent find, added to the previous discoveries of gold, platinum, copper, iron, and coal on the continent, will induce signatories to let the ban lapse. Today’s Birthday: RICHARD EVELYN BYRD (1888)
Richard Evelyn Byrd (1888)
A pioneer in aviation and exploration, Byrd was a member of the first expeditions to fly over the North and South Poles, undertaken in 1926 and 1929 respectively. The North Pole flight earned him a Congressional Medal of Honor and helped him secure funding for his subsequent expeditions, like the one to Antarctica two years later. From the base he established there, he went on to explore and map large areas of the continent. Why do some believe he was undeserving of the Medal of Honor? More… Discuss
