Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI), the use of computers to model the behavioral aspects of human reasoning and learning, has captured global interest for years. Cybernetics, one area of AI study, is the analysis of the communication and control processes of biological organisms and their relationship to mechanical and electrical systems; advances in this area could lead to “thinking” robots. In science fiction, AI is often portrayed attempting to overthrow human authority. What is “the Singularity”? More… Discuss

Special Effects

Special Effects

Often relied upon heavily in the science fiction and action genres, special effects are techniques used in film and television to portray scenes that cannot be achieved by normal means, such as space travel. Common examples are the use of rear-screen projections, in which previously photographed material is projected behind the actors; the filming of miniature objects in such a way as to make them look larger; and the use of animation. What are “live” special effects? More… Discuss

‘The last straw’ — Pakistan turns against terror

‘This is the last straw!”: That’s the message that Pakistanis all across the political spectrum, in a rare show of unanimity, are trying to send after the worst Islamic terror attacks the nation has suffered in more than a decade.

Tuesday’s attack on a school near Peshawar (in northwestern Pakistan) claimed at least 141 lives, most of them schoolchildren and teachers.

Not surprisingly, a faction of the Pakistani Taliban claimed credit for the carnage. What was new was that even a number of jihadist groups and fellow-travelers joined the nationwide chorus of condemnation.

news: “Eugene” Passes Turing Test

“Eugene” Passes Turing Test

In 1950, British mathematician and computer theorist Alan Turing predicted that by 2000, a computer could be programmed so that after 5 minutes of questioning, the average interrogator would not have more than a 70% chance of telling whether he was talking to a machine or another person. The ability of a machine to carry on a conversation indistinguishable from that of a human, he contended, is the true measure of artificial intelligence. And while he was a little off on the timing, a computer program has finally passed the Turing test. Last Saturday, a program called Eugene Goostman convinced 33% of the judges at the Royal Society in London that it was human. More… Discuss

CAPTCHAS CRACKED BY INTELLIGENT SOFTWARE

CAPTCHAs Cracked by Intelligent Software

A technology start-up working to create a computer system that works like a human brain says it has developed software that can crack CAPTCHAs between 90 and 97 percent of the time. CAPTCHAs—Completely Automated Public Turing tests to tell Computers and Humans Apart—are random words or letters displayed in a camouflaged and distorted fashion to ensure that a human is making an online transaction rather than a computer. Turing tests are intended to test a computer’s capacity for human-like thought and are seen as a measure of artificial intelligenceMore… Discuss
