today’s birthday: Claude Monet (1840)

Claude Monet (1840)

A French landscape painter, Monet helped found the Impressionist movement in the late 19th century. In fact, the term “Impressionism” is derived from the title of one of his paintings, Impression: Sunrise. His renowned plein air, or outdoor, paintings capture natural landscapes with accents of sunlight and vibrant colors. To show the effects of changes in light, he often painted the same subject repeatedly, at different times of day and in different seasons. What are some examples? More… Discuss

THIS DAY IN THE YESTERYEAR: Coco Chanel Introduces Chanel No. 5 (1921)

Coco Chanel Introduces Chanel No. 5 (1921)

Chanel No. 5—one of the best-known perfumes in the world—was the first fragrance from Parisian couturier Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. It is rumored that five was Chanel’s lucky number, and that she liked option number five best when given numbered sample scents during the development of her iconic perfume. Created at a time when “respectable” women favored the pure scents of garden flowers, No. 5 provocatively blended jasmine and a glandular secretion harvested from what cat-like animal? More… Discuss

ARTICLE: MAKEUP: FROM KOHL TO COSMECEUTICALS

Makeup: From Kohl to Cosmeceuticals

Cosmetics have been used for millennia to simulate or enhance the appearance of youthfulness, health, and beauty—eye makeup and scented creams were used by the ancient Egyptians as early as the 4th millennium BCE—but they have not always been viewed favorably. In the 19th century, for example, Queen Victoria publicly declared the use of makeup by anyone other than actors to be improper and vulgar. Today, however, the cosmetics industry is thriving. How much is spent on cosmetics each year? More…Discuss

Hideous Blobfish Voted World’s Ugliest Animal

It is relatively easy to rally support for cute and cuddly endangered creatures like pandas, but what about those animals that are not quite so pleasant to look at? In an effort to bring attention to some of “Mother Nature’s more aesthetically challenged children,” the Ugly Animal Preservation Society hosted a contest to select the world’s ugliest creature. Despite stiff competition from the kakapo, axolotl, Titicaca water frog, and proboscis monkey, the aptly named blobfish—which bears some resemblance to the Star Wars character Jabba the Hutt—claimed the title. More…

Ralph Waldo Emerson about first journeys discoveries, a fool’s paradise

SUPERMAX

Supermax

Supermax prisons provide long-term, segregated housing for the most dangerous criminals. An early supermax-style prison unit opened in Australia in 1975 but was shuttered after just two years due to human rights concerns. Since then, the supermax model has been adopted by many corrections systems around the globe despite continued criticism. “Unabomber” Theodore Kaczynski and 9-11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui are among the most infamous US supermax inmates. What is everyday life like for them? More… Discuss

Despair (poetic thought by George-B)

Scream of the world (poetic thought by George-B)

The world is made of noisy silence-
a silence all so worldly-
Within the wavy textured void-
the padded silence-
Resides the deafening-silent-

Scream of the world.

Regina Spektor – Long brown hair

regina spektor – Long Brown Hair (Live)

Recorded: 15th October 2004, Housing Works

Lyrics:

She had long brown hair
All down her breast
Made me think about my future
Made me think about my past
She was so pretty
As pretty as can be
And I thought:
“My god, why shouldn’t it be me?”

Her skin was tight, her manner was free
She gave me that look that seemed to say:
“Hey you, look at me!”
Her smile was crooked and good
As she sucked her Capri
And I thought:
“My god, why shouldn’t it be me?”

C’mon, c’mon, c’mon, c’mon god
Why shouldn’t it be me?

Her body was free!

Don’t tell me what’s proper
Anyone can see
I wasn’t even her first, so don’t blame it on me
She was so pretty, as pretty as can be
And I thought:
“My god, why shouldn’t it be me?”

Oh c’mon, just this once, lord!
Why shouldn’t it be me?

Her body was free!

You know what the bible says?
I’ll tell you what it says
It says:
“Don’t put a stumbling block in front of someone who can’t see
Don’t put a beautiful body in front of someone who’s hungry,”

She was so pretty
As pretty as can be
And I thought:
“My god, why shouldn’t it be me?”

C’mon lord, why shouldn’t it be me?

HAN CHINESE CLOTHING

Han Chinese Clothing

The traditional clothing of the Han Chinese people, also known ashanfu, is no longer used as everyday garb in China, but it is worn at festivals, special occasions, and cultural events. There is also a movement to revive hanfu for daily wear, in replacement of Western styles. Hanfu outfits typically consist of diagonally wrapped robes and may include several layers. How did formal hanfu garments differ for ordinary citizens, government officials, and royalty? More… Discuss

Wear our Han cloth, recover our true Chinese culture – Han culture.
This video explained in the modern time, Chinese young people remembered their own cultures, this culture is original Chinese culture, and it has been forgotten by Chinese for more than 300 years after the Mancu Qing Dynasty. (Manchu Qing Dynasty is not Chinese)
In Qing Dynasty Manchu forbit Chinese to wear their own cloth – Han cloth.
Called 剃发易服,不从者斩.—- “Chang your cloth and cut your hair, otherwise kill them “
Now, in our generation, we find back our tradition dress — Hanfu, and Han-Tang cultures.
