Nobel Prizes are awarded each year to people, regardless of nationality, deemed to have made the most significant practical efforts toward the well-being of the human race. In his will, the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) directed that the income from his estate be used to fund five annual prizes. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901; a sixth prize—in economics—was added in 1969. Winners receive the awards at a special ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden, on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. The peace prize is awarded in Oslo, Norway. More… Discuss

Halve Your Sugar Intake if the WHO Knows What’s Good for You

The World Health Organization (WHO) is recommending that people aim to get no more than five percent of their daily caloric intake from sugar, half the long-standing recommendation of 10 percent. For an adult with a normal body mass index, or BMI, this new recommendation translates to about six teaspoons’ worth of sugar a day. Overweight Women Predisposed to Preterm Birth

There appears to be a correlation between the body mass index (BMI) of a pregnant woman at her first prenatal visit and her risk of preterm birth. A review of Swedish medical records found that the more overweight a woman was early in her pregnancy, the more likely she was to have a premature baby. Among both overweight and obese women, weight-related maternal complications increased the risk of medically indicated preterm delivery—meaning artificially induced labor or cesarean section. Additionally, obese women were at greater risk of spontaneous extremely preterm delivery, defined for the purposes of the study as between 22 and 27 weeks gestation. More… Discuss
