Quicksilver

Quicksilver

Quicksilver, commonly known as mercury and represented in the periodic table with the symbol Hg, is a chemical element with an atomic number of 80. A heavy, silvery, transition metal, mercury is the only elemental metal that is liquid at room temperature. It is used in thermometers, barometers, and other scientific apparatuses. Due to the toxicity of the element, however, the use of mercury in thermometers has been largely phased out in the interests of health and safety. What has replaced it? More… Discuss

Gustav Kirchhoff (1824)

German physicist Gustav Kirchhoff was a pioneering scientist who contributed to the fundamental understanding of electrical circuits, spectroscopy, and the emission of black-body radiation by heated objects. He formulated several eponymous laws related to electrical circuits and thermodynamic reactions. Kirchhoff and Robert Bunsen—of Bunsen burner fame—began a new era in astronomy when they applied spectrum analysis to the Sun. Which two chemical elements did they discover in the 1860s? More… Discuss

THIS DAY IN THE YESTERYEAR: DMITRI MENDELEEV PRESENTS FIRST PERIODIC TABLE (1869)

Dmitri Mendeleev Presents First Periodic Table (1869)

The periodic table is a tabular display of all known chemical elements arranged according to the periodic law discovered by Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev. The elements are arranged in columns and rows according to increasing atomic number, which is defined as the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. The table summarizes the major properties of the elements and enables predictions to be made about their behavior. How many elements currently appear on the periodic table? More…
