How Does Dry Cleaning Work?

How Does Dry Cleaning Work?

Dry cleaning is the process of cleaning fabrics without water. Special solvents and soaps are used so as not to harm fabrics. The practice began in France in the middle of the 19th century, after a dye-works owner noticed that his tablecloth became cleaner after his maid spilled kerosene on it. Early solvents were extremely flammable and led to many fires and explosions. Newer chlorinated hydrocarbon synthetic solvents, such as perchlorethylene, are nonflammable but pose what other dangers? Guess what: Caffeinated Clothing Can’t Cut Waistlines (as claimed by deceptive advertising)

Caffeinated Clothing Can’t Cut Waistlines

When it comes to losing weight, there are few shortcuts around eating right and getting regular exercise, but the marketplace is still saturated with quick-fix weight-loss products purporting to magically melt away the pounds. In the US, consumers have spent millions of dollars on caffeine-infused bras, girdles, leggings, and other articles of clothing that manufacturers claimed would break down fat, resulting in weight loss and reduced cellulite. However, there is no scientific evidence to back up these claims, and companies selling these products, under fire from US regulators, have agreed to refund customers who fell for the deceptive advertising. Hospital Garb Could Be Your Own

Hospital Garb Could Be Your Own

Traditional hospital gowns have been the butt of many a joke, but for those who have to don them, they are no laughing matter. Being hospitalized can rob a person of much of his dignity, and while aspects of this are unavoidable, hospital apparel does not have to be one of them. In many cases, researchers say, it is clinically reasonable for patients to wear their own clothing, or at least pants underneath their open-backed gowns, but few take advantage of this because most are unaware that it is an option. Just a thought: “Fictitious reality…”, by George-B ©Always

Just a thought:  “Fictitious reality: Nothing complicates reality more than fiction
fictitious reality is not something new:It’s been allowed
to make court for emperors and kings,
houses and congresses
presidents and councils

The story of clothes, the story of tailors are
as fictitious as they are real

They’re as real today as they were in the dark aged years
They are cloaked in lies, and shades of no pure thought
They eat the mouth of the truthful and worse: they care not!
They feel the running of colors and fixation of lie, the false apparel that’s as transparent as finest crystal glass.

Planned Obsolescence

Planned obsolescence is a policy of deliberately limiting the life of a product in order to encourage the purchaser to replace it, thereby stimulating sales. Now applied to many different products, notably computer software, the concept first emerged in the 1920s when companies began to analyze every aspect of mass production. Planned obsolescence can refer to both technical failures and to “style” obsolescence. What are some examples of modern products that are designed to become obsolete? More… Discuss

Supermax prisons provide long-term, segregated housing for the most dangerous criminals. An early supermax-style prison unit opened in Australia in 1975 but was shuttered after just two years due to human rights concerns. Since then, the supermax model has been adopted by many corrections systems around the globe despite continued criticism. “Unabomber” Theodore Kaczynski and 9-11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui are among the most infamous US supermax inmates. What is everyday life like for them? More… Discuss

Modern, Skimpy Bikini Debuted at Paris Pool Fashion Show (1946)

Although women have worn bikini-like two-piece garments for centuries—mosaics from the 4th century depict women in such garb—the modern bikini was only introduced in 1946. Anticipating that his revealing swimwear design would have an explosive effect on fashion, French engineer Louis Réard named his skimpy suit after the Bikini atoll in the central Pacific, where US nuclear testing had just begun. However, he struggled to find a model to debut his G-string bikini. Who finally agreed to wear it? More…Discuss

Coat of Many Colors” is the title of a song written and recorded by American country music artist Dolly Parton, which she has described on numerous occasions as her favorite of the songs she has written. It was released in October 1971 as the second single and title track from the album Coat of Many Colors. She composed the song in 1969, while traveling with Porter Wagoneron a tour bus. (She explained in her 1994 memoires, “My Life and Other Unfinished Business”, because she could find no paper, as the song came to her, she wrote it on the back of a dry cleaning receipt from one of Wagoner’s suits; when the song became a hit, Wagoner had the receipt framed.) She recorded the song in April 1971, making it the title song for her Coat of Many Colors album. The song reached #4 on the U.S. country singles charts.

The song tells of how Parton’s mother stitched together a coat for her daughter out of rags given to the family. As she sewed, she told her child the biblical story of Joseph and his Coat of Many Colors. The excited child, “with patches on my britches and holes in both my shoes,” rushed to school, “just to find the others laughing and making fun of me” for wearing a coat made of rags.

Back through the years
I go wonderin once again
Back to the seasons of my youth
I recall a box of rags that someone gave us
And how my momma put the rags to use
There were rags of many colors
Every piece was small
And I didn’t have a coat
And it was way down in the fall
Momma sewed the rags together
Sewin every piece with love
She made my coat of many colors
That I was so proud of
As she sewed, she told a story
From the bible, she had read
About a coat of many colors
Joseph wore and then she said
Perhaps this coat will bring you
Good luck and happiness
And I just couldnt wait to wear it
And momma blessed it with a kiss

My coat of many colors
That my momma made for me
Made only from rags
But I wore it so proudly
Although we had no money
I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me

So with patches on my britches
Holes in both my shoes
In my coat of many colors
I hurried off to school
Just to find the others laughing
And making fun of me
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me

And oh I couldnt understand it
For I felt I was rich
And I told them of the love
My momma sewed in every stitch
And I told em all the story
Momma told me while she sewed
And how my coat of many colors
Was worth more than all their clothes

But they didn’t understand it
And I tried to make them see
That one is only poor
Only if they choose to be
Now I know we had no money
But I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me
Made just for me
