Officials May Ban Chocolate Bait after Bear Overdose

New Hampshire wildlife officials are considering proposing a ban on chocolate as bear bait after four black bears were found dead last September near a trapping site where nearly 100 pounds (45 kg) of chocolate and doughnuts were left as bait. An autopsy revealed that the bears overdosed on theobromine, a naturally occurring toxic ingredient found in chocolate. Bears are especially drawn to sweets when building up their fat stores for hibernation. The proposal may call for an outright ban on chocolate as bait, or it may recommend a limit on its use. Rare Rhino on Brink of Extinction A northern white rhino died at the San Diego Zoo this week, leaving only five in the world. Only one male remains, and is considered unable to reproduce naturally due to old age. An international team of experts is now considering ways to save the species, including the possibility of in vitro fertilization. Hopes for natural breeding were dashed earlier this year when a younger male died in October. Northern white rhinos have been hunted to near extinction for their horns. More… Discuss

Manger Yam is a harvest celebration of the yam crop observed in Haiti. It is considered taboo to eat any of the new yams before the festival for fear of falling ill or bringing ruin to the yam crop. In Vodoun belief, it is very important for people to maintain relationships with the dead, as well as with each other and the gods, so the deceased are included in the Manger Yam. As adults increasingly ditch their vehicles for more eco-friendly and waistline-friendly modes of transportation, more bikes end up on the road, and this isn’t all good. Stop and Smell the Roses

One’s sense of smell, more specifically the loss of one’s sense of smell, could be an indicator of impending death. A study finds that older adults whose sense of smell has declined have a greater risk of dying within five years. Of participants with the most severe olfactory dysfunction, 39 percent passed away within five years. By comparison, just 19 percent of those with moderate dysfunction and 10 percent of those with a normal sense of smell died during that same period. This is not to say that the loss of sense of smell is directly causing deaths. Rather, researchers believe, it is a warning sign of declining health. More… Discuss

“Nagged to Death” Not Just a Figure of Speech

Frequent arguments with your partner, children, friends, or other relatives could be taking years off your life. Research shows an association between stressful social relations and increased mortality risk. Men appear to be more vulnerable to the effects of this sort of stress than women. The effects are also stronger in those who are unemployed. The findings are not all that surprising given that stress is known to have physiological effects that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, but they may cause us to think twice the next time we find ourselves on the verge of nagging a loved one over some minor matter. Five Is Good, But Seven May Be Better

 

Current dietary guidelines recommend that people consume a minimum of five servings of fruits andvegetables a day, but researchers say that number should be upped to seven. A study of more than 65,000 men and women shows that the risk of premature death decreases with increased fruit and vegetable consumption. Interestingly, fresh vegetables appear to provide the greatest benefit, followed by salad and then fruit.Canned fruit, meanwhile, actually appears to increase the risk of death, perhaps because it is packed in sugary syrup. More… Discuss

Pollution is going to be the death of us. According to World Health Organization estimates, air pollution contributed to the deaths of seven million people in 2012, making it the world’s greatest environmental health risk. The deaths were concentrated most heavily in low- and middle-income countries, primarily in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific region. SIMPLE UMBILICAL GEL CUTS INFANT MORTALITY IN NEPAL

A simple, low-cost intervention is dramatically cutting the rate of newborn deaths in Nepal and could soon be doing so in other parts of the world as well. Since 2011, when Nepalese hospitals began using chlorhexidine gel to prevent umbilical cord infection, the country has seen a 23 percent drop in newborn deaths due to infection. This was an ancient Roman festival held in honor of the manes, or souls of the dead—in particular, deceased relatives. It began a season for remembering the dead, which ended with the Feralia on February 21. This week was a quiet, serious occasion, without the rowdiness that characterized other Roman festivals. Vodka Hastening Death in Russian Men

One in four Russian men dies before the age of 55, compared to just one in 10 in the US and seven in 100 in the UK, and researchers say vodka is largely to blame for the extremely high premature death rate in Russian males. Men who reported smoking and drinking three or more half-liter bottles of vodka a week were found in a recent study to have a much greater risk of premature death than those who smoked but consumed less than one bottle of vodka a week. Alcohol poisoning, accidents, violence, suicide, and diseases like throat and liver cancer, pancreatitis, and liver disease were among the most frequent causes of death in heavy drinkers. More… Discuss

Richard Strauss – Tod und Verklärung, Op.24

Richard Strauss – Tod und Verklärung, Op.24

“Tod und Verklärung” (Death and Transfiguration), Op. 24, is a tone poem for large orchestra by Richard Strauss. Strauss began composition in the late summer of 1888 and completed the work on November 18, 1889. The work is dedicated to the composer’s friend Friedrich Rosch.
Unusual for a composer of 25 years of age, the music depicts the death of an artist. At Strauss’s request, this was described in a poem by the composer’s friend Alexander Ritter as an interpretation of Death and Transfiguration, after it was composed. As the man lies dying, thoughts of his life pass through his head: his childhood innocence, the struggles of his manhood, the attainment of his worldly goals; and at the end, he receives the longed-for transfiguration “from the infinite reaches of heaven”.
There are four parts (with Ritter’s poetic thoughts condensed):
1. Largo (The sick man, near death)
2. Allegro molto agitato (The battle between life and death offers no respite to the man)
3. Meno mosso (The dying man’s life passes before him)
4. Moderato (The sought-after transfiguration)

MEASLES-LIKE VIRUS LIKELY BEHIND DOLPHIN DEATHS

Scientists believe they have finally figured out what is causing the extensive dolphin die-off along the US east coast: a measles-like virus. In the past two months, more than 300 bottlenose dolphins have washed up dead or dying on beaches stretching from New York to North Carolina, about 10 times the average for this period. An outbreak of cetacean morbillivirus, which suppresses the immune system and leaves those affected vulnerable to other diseases, is thought to be responsible for the “unusual mortality event,” as it has been designated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. More… Discuss

High Sodium, Low Potassium Diet Danger

It is widely believed that eating too much salt can increase one’s risk of hypertension and death from heart disease or stroke, though recent studies investigating this assertion have had mixed results. The latest study from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found a link between high sodium consumption and increased risk of heart attack related death but also noted that potassium rich foods could help defend against salt’s ill effects. The 15-year study followed more than 12,000 people and showed that those who had both a high salt intake and a low potassium intake had the highest risk of dying from any cause. More… Discuss

Those who worked in industry like ceramic tiles or ice cream,  know that adding salt (Sodium Chloride) to a liquid increases its viscosity and rheology properties. In the human body, blood viscosity is also controlled by the amount of salt: When too much salt is in the system the blood becomes more viscous which results in the increase in the blood pressure. As a counteraction we become thirsty, and require more water than needed in order to dilute the blood and bring the viscosity down. Now we have two negative health effects: water retention and high blood pressure.
The salt balance, a mixture of Sodium and Potassium Chlorides, add an extra taste to food, due to its Potassium Chloride. There are different concentrations available, al the way to Sodium Chloride substitute table salt (only Potassium Chloride).

While one can buy all these food supplements from any market, it is important to consult with a medical professional, before committing to a low Sodium Diet, use of water pill, of other medication prescribed to reduce the blood pressure.

Cancer Death Risk Greater for Men

US researchers say men diagnosed with cancer are more likely to die from the disease than women. They attribute the discrepancy in part to the fact that men are at greater risk of developing cancer than women, perhaps as a result of differences in exposure to carcinogens or hormonal or metabolic differences. According to the American Cancer Society, men have about a 1 in 2 chance of developing cancer, while women have just a 1 in 3 chance. In addition, men are more likely than women to have advanced disease by the time their cancer is detected. More… Discuss
