Stephen Foster Memorial Day (2015)

Stephen Collins Foster (1826-1864) was a composer whose popular songs and ballads have found a lasting place in American music. When he died at the age of 37, he left behind more than 200 compositions—among them “Camptown Races,” “Oh! Susanna,” and “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair.” January 13, the anniversary of Foster’s death, was proclaimed Stephen Foster Memorial Day in 1951. In Florida, this day is part of Stephen Foster Memorial Week, and events include performances by musical groups from schools and universities throughout the state. More… Discuss

today’s birthday: Chuck Berry (1926)

Chuck Berry (1926)

Berry was one of the most innovative musicians of the 1950s. His unique blues-derived guitar style and witty lyrics helped define the rock music genre and earned him one of the first spots in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A dynamic performer, he is also known for his signature crouching and gliding “duck walk,” a move that has been imitated by many musicians. What legendary musician said, “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry'”? More… Discuss

Quotations 101: Henry Miller (tropic of capricorn, tropic of cancer)

“To walk in money through the night crowd, protected by money, lulled by money, dulled by money, the crowd itself a money, the breath money, no least single object anywhere that is not money, money, money everywhere and still not enough, and then no money or a little money or less money or more money, but money, always money, and if you have money or you don’t have money it is the money that counts and money makes money, but what makes money make money?”

“No man is great enough or wise enough for any of us to surrender our destiny to. The only way in which anyone can lead us is to restore to us the belief in our own guidance.”

“Take a good look at me. Now tell me, do you think I’m the sort of fellow who gives a fuck what happens once he’s dead? “

Elvis Presley Gives Last Concert (1977)

Elvis Presley, now known to millions as “The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” became a national sensation in 1956 and dominated the world of rock music until 1963. His most successful songs include “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Love Me Tender,” and “Don’t Be Cruel.” His success spawned a spate of B-movie appearances, but his popularity waned in the late 60s, and he developed a drug dependence and died in 1977 at age 42. What theories do some fans cite in their claims that Elvis did not really die in 1977? More… Discuss

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY: ERNEST TUBB (1914)

Ernest Tubb (1914)

Born on a cotton farm near the modern-day ghost town of Crisp, Texas, Tubb became an important country musician. His drawling vocals, unaffected lyrics, and espousal of the electric guitar made him a major influence on honky tonk. His radio program, “Midnight Jamboree,” helped launch such stars as Elvis Presley. Tubb once drunkenly fired a .357 Magnum at someone in Nashville. Luckily for the near-victim, who was not the man Tubb had been looking for, he missed. Who was Tubb’s intended target? More… Discuss
