Key Biscayne

Key Biscayne

Key Biscayne is an island located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay. While named a ‘key’, it is not geologically part of the Florida Keys, but a barrier island composed of sand eroded from the Appalachian Mountains and carried there. When Hurricane Andrew stripped part of the island in 1992, archeologists found extensive evidence of a large Tequesta community that had lived there up to 2,000 years ago. What is the island’s history with regard to slavery? More… Discuss

picture of the day: The Swedish Nightengale

The Swedish Nightengale

Swedish-born Jenny Lind (1820-1887), the greatest operatic and concert soprano of her age, was already the toast of Europe when she was approached by American showman P.T. Barnum in 1847. Even before hearing her voice, Barnum signed the ‘Swedish Nightingale‘ for 150 American concerts at the enormous sum of $150,000. With the help of Barnum’s matchless marketing, Jenny Lind mania swept America, with crowds of the rich and famous and ordinary music lovers alike falling at her feet. This 1850 daguerreotype of Miss Lind was taken by Matthew Brady.

Must read: Ebola in Liberia: According to Dr. Kwan Kew Lai’s Blog

Today is the Feast of St. Kew, a little known Welsh saint, probably of the fifth century. She was the sister of a hermit called Docco who founded a monastery at or near the village of St. Kew which is now in Cornwall, England. Nothing much is known about her except that she was able to cause some wild boars to obey her, this ability caught the attention of her said brother who condescended to finally speak to her. Why they were not on speaking terms to begin with was a mystery. What is in a name? Kew is my given name. It would be unheard of to have a saint with my name especially someone from Asia. My daughter, Cara, was told by her Confraternity Christian Development (CCD) teacher that everyone has a saint who bears his or her name. She searched in vain for a saint with her name.

Cat Returns from the Grave

Cat Returns from the Grave

A cat in Florida is being hailed as a “miracle” and a “zombie” after seemingly coming back from the dead. Bart the cat was hit by a car earlier this month, assumed dead, and buried. Five days later, he dug free of his grave and—despite serious injuries—got himself to a neighbor’s yard. Bart’s owner then brought him to the Humane Society of Tampa, where he has since received treatment for a broken jaw and extensive facial injuries, including surgery to remove one of his eyes. Bart is expected to make a full recovery in about six weeks. More… Discuss

Diamond Simulants

Country singers and Las Vegas dancers, among others, can thank diamond simulants for jazzing up their glitzy ensembles. They are distinct from synthetic diamonds, which, unlike simulants, are made of the same chemical elements as natural diamonds. Common examples of artificial diamond simulants are rhinestones and cubic zirconia. What are some examples of natural diamond simulants? More… Discuss

ARTICLE: LA FLORIDA

La Florida

In 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León set out from Puerto Rico, sailing northeast through the Bahamas. He soon sighted the Florida peninsula, which he believed was actually an island, and in early April, he became the first European to reach it. His discovery coincided with the Easter feast, Pascua Florida, and is perhaps the reason why he named the land he claimed for Spain “La Florida.” What legendary site do many believe the explorer was searching for when he found Florida? More… Discuss

TREASURE-HUNTING FAMILY FINDS SUNKEN HOARD

Treasure-Hunting Family Finds Sunken Hoard

Family time for one Florida family means scouring the seas for sunken treasure, and this weekend, the Schmitts struck pay dirt, hauling up a hoard of gold worth an estimated $300,000 from the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. The treasure belonged to a convoy of 11 ships sunk in a hurricane off the coast of Florida in 1715. The state of Florida will be allowed to take possession of up to 20 percent of the haul for display in a state museum, and the remainder will be split between the family and the company that owns the rights to the wreck site. More… Discuss
