First a sailor and then a successful stockbroker in Paris, Gauguin took up painting on weekends when he was in his mid-20s. Eventually, with the encouragement of Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, he devoted himself completely to art, quitting his job and separating from his wife and five children. Masterpieces Missing after Museum Theft

The art world is reeling after bold thieves in the Netherlands broke into Rotterdam‘s Kunsthal museum yesterday and made off with several works worth tens of millions of dollars. In total, seven paintings were stolen, among them works by PicassoMatisse,Monet, Gauguin, and other prominent artists. Investigators are trying to figure out how the thieves managed to pull off the heist given that the museum supposedly has a state-of-the-art alarm system. More… Discuss
