The largest marathon in the world at that time, the first running of the Mayor Daley Marathon—now the Bank of America Chicago Marathon—drew 4,200 participants. Since then it has grown both in size and prestige. The race is now capped at 45,000 runners and is considered one of the world’s most renowned marathons. Emil Zátopek (1922)

Zátopek, the “Czech Locomotive,” was a long-distance runner who won three gold medals at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He won gold in the 5,000-m and 10,000-m runs, and he amazingly earned gold yet again after deciding at the last minute to compete in the first marathon of his life. His wife, competing in the javelin toss, added a gold medal to the family collection at the same Olympics. Zátopek’s success was likely due to his grueling training methods. Prepackaged Diet Foods Linked to Greater Weight-Loss Success

When it comes to dieting, prepackaged, portion-controlled food plans may be the way to go. In a recent study, dieters on a structured diet plan consisting of five pre-packaged meals each day along with a single meal prepared by the dieter lost an average of 16.5 pounds (7.5 kg) over six months—6.7 percent of their starting weight. By comparison, those merely advised on how to keep to a 1,000 calorie-per-day diet lost just 8.4 pounds (3.8 kg)—3.4 percent of their starting weight. Participants from both groups had a tendency to rebound toward their original weight, but a year in, the dieters on the packaged meal plan still had kept more of the weight off. More…Discuss
