TODAY’S HOLIDAY: POLISH CONSTITUTION DAY

Polish Constitution Day

May 3, known in Poland as Swieto Trzeciego Maja, is a patriotic legal holiday honoring the nation’s first constitution, adopted in 1791. It introduced fundamental changes in the way Poland was governed, based on the ideas of the French Revolution, and represented an attempt to preserve the country’s independence. Although the May 3rd Constitution (as it was called) represented a great advance for the Polish people, it also aroused the anxieties of neighboring countries and eventually led to theSecond Partition two years later. More… Discuss

TODAY’S HOLIDAY: EARTH DAY

Earth Day

Earth Day is now observed regularly throughout the United States and in many other countries. Typical ways of celebrating Earth Day includeplanting trees, picking up roadside trash, and conducting various programs for recycling and conservation. Schoolchildren may be asked to use only recyclable containers for their snacks and lunches, and families often try to give up wasteful habits. More… Discuss

TODAY’S HOLIDAY: SHEELAH’S DAY

Sheelah’s Day

Even the Irish aren’t exactly sure who Sheelah was. Some say she was St. Patrick‘s wife; some say his mother. But one thing that they all seem to agree on is how this day should be celebrated: by drinking whiskey. The shamrock worn on St. Patrick’s Day is supposed to be worn on the following day as well, until it is “drowned” in the last glass of the evening. If someone should drop his shamrock into his glass and drink it before the “drowning ceremony” takes place, he has no choice but to get a fresh shamrock and another glass. More… Discuss

TODAY’S HOLIDAY: BURNING THE CLAVIE

Burning the Clavie

The Burning of the Clavie takes place in Burghead, a fishing village in the region of Moray, Scotland. Local residents make the clavie by sawing a tar barrel into a larger and smaller half, breaking the larger half into pieces and stuffing it inside the smaller half along with tinder and tar. At dusk, the Clavie King sets the clavie on fire and leads a procession through town to a high headland along the coast, where the flames ignite a huge bonfire. At the end of the festivities, townsfolk gather pieces of the clavie to light a New Year fire believed to keep witches and evil spirits away for a year. More… Discuss

Unique Musical Moments/Great Performences: The Evening Prayer – Kathleen Battle, Frederica von Stade

In the original German, with the English translation:

Abends, will ich schlafen gehn,
Vierzehn Engel um mich stehn:
Zwei zu meinen Häupten,
Zwei zu meinen Füßen,
Zwei zu meiner Rechten,
Zwei zu meiner Linken,
Zweie, die mich decken,
Zweie, die mich wecken,
Zweie, die mich weisen,
Zu Himmels-Paradeisen

Evenings, when I go to sleep,
Fourteen angels with me keep,
Two stand at my head,
Two at the foot of my bed,
Two are at my right hand,
Two are at my left hand,
Two in covers tuck me,
Two at morning wake me,
Two that point the way to rise
To heaven’s paradise.

Though maybe not quite a “Christmas” song, it’s as close to one as I can imagine! These 2 amazing perfomers are superb! We’ve Engelbert Humperdinck to thank for this unique song and melody, from “Hänsel und Gretel.” Just one of many from his brilliant opera.
Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!!

Halloween Special: Real-Life Vampires Hunt with Stealth -Trick or Treat?

Armed with sharp teeth, a blood-lapping tongue, and an anticoagulant in its saliva, the vampire bat’s attack is so subtle that it can sometimes feast undetected. Daniel Streicker, a National Geographic grantee and University of Glasgow research fellow, explores the bats’ sophisticated hunting strategy. (Some of this footage is a demonstration in a controlled laboratory environment.)

Today’s Birthday: ANNA MARIE JARVIS (1864) the tireless campaigner for “Mother’s Day

Anna Marie Jarvis (1864)

Though she never wed or had children herself, Jarvis campaigned tirelessly for the establishment of an annual holiday honoring mothers. She began her campaign after the death of her mother, a social activist who had brought mothers together in an effort to counter the divisions caused by the Civil War. By 1914, Mother’s Day had been proclaimed a US national holiday. Rather than savor her success, Jarvis soon became one of the holiday’s most vehement opponents. Why did she want it abolished?More… Discuss

Grigore Lese-O moarte, ce ti-as plati

This song from the northernmost places in Transylvania is refered to my by my good friend, from the beautiful town of Oradea. I want to share it with the world, so it is  appreciated now, or when one would want to. Just as I kept alive memories from the past a verse, a musical phrase, a sound, a delicious dish, or the  aroma of the quinces lined up in the seal of the window from November to Christmas time, I know that where ever we may find ourselves, we all have deep in our hearts the oil candle of our first home, the first memories. So come along, one and all: Don’t have to take off your shoes, come to the warmth of our old traditions, rain or shine, day or night, the more we are the warmer it is, the more time you stay, the better we’ll get to know each other.

Thank You, Friends.
