Bushidō (武士道?), literally “the way of the warrior”, is a Japanese word for the way of the samurai life, loosely analogous to the concept of chivalry. The etymology of the Japanese word bushido, stemming from the Zhou Dynasty (1111–256 BCE)(Zhang, and Fan, 2003) or (1818-221 BCE)(de Bary, and Bloom) Chinese text Zhou bi 周髀 (Cullen, 1996) and word wushidao (武士道), loosely meaning a soldier well-trained in martial arts. The subword “wushi,” (武士) when bifurcated into two parts, the first term “wu” (武) describes a person competent in martial arts such as King Wu, with the second term “shi,” (士) meaning army. The two characters together (武士) meaning warrior or palace guard. The last part of the word, “dao” (道) is the same as “do” in Japanese, meaning “way of” (Dao, 2003) such as the Japanese martial art Kendo (剣道) “way of the sword”.

The Japanese understanding of the word is predicated on the samurai moral code stressing frugality, loyalty, martial arts mastery, and honor unto death. Born from Neo-Confucianism during times of peace in Tokugawa Japan and following Confucian texts, Bushido was also influenced by Shinto and Zen Buddhism, allowing the violent existence of the samurai to be tempered by wisdom and serenity. Bushidō developed between the 9th and 20th centuries and numerous translated documents dating from the 12th to 16th centuries demonstrate its wide influence across the whole of Japan, although some scholars have noted “the term bushidō itself is rarely attested in premodern literature.”

Under the Tokugawa Shogunate, aspects of bushidō became formalized into Japanese feudal law.

According to the Japanese dictionary Shogakukan Kokugo Daijiten, “Bushidō is defined as a unique philosophy (ronri) that spread through the warrior class from the Muromachi (chusei) period.”

The word was first used in Japan during the 17th century.[10] It came into common usage in Japan and the West after the 1899 publication of Nitobe Inazō’s Bushido: The Soul of Japan.

In Bushido (1899), Inazō wrote: …Bushidō, then, is the code of moral principles which the samurai were required or instructed to observe…. More frequently it is a code unuttered and unwritten…. It was an organic growth of decades and centuries of military career.

Nitobe was not the first person to document Japanese chivalry in this way. In his text Feudal and Modern Japan (1896), historian Arthur May Knapp wrote: The samurai of thirty years ago had behind him a thousand years of training in the law of honor, obedience, duty, and self-sacrifice…. It was not needed to create or establish them. As a child he had but to be instructed, as indeed he was from his earliest years, in the etiquette of self-immolation.

The Bushidō code is typified by seven virtues: Rectitude (義 gi?) Courage (勇氣 yūki?) Benevolence (仁 jin?) Respect (禮 rei?) Honesty (誠 makoto?) Honour (名誉 meiyo?) Loyalty (忠義 chūgi?)

The notes include a comment made by Philip Hope-Wallace when the broadcast was repeated in 1979 to mark the centenary of Beecham‘s birth. He wrote: “the beguiling melodies are exactly the sort of light music which Beecham could give a delicacy and vitality all its own. It is a lovely recording which does not sound its age of nearly 30 years ago.” Twenty-two years further on those comments remain entirely apt. …
…admirers of Bizet should snap up this issue while they can. The same applies to devotees of Beecham, the more so since this is a ‘live’ performance caught on the wing and a splendid example of his art in music to which he was so well suited.

The Tale of Tsar Saltan (Russian: Сказка о царе Салтане, Skazka o Tsare Saltane) is an operain four acts with a prologue, seven scenes, by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The libretto was written by Vladimir Belsky, and is based on the poem of the same name by Aleksandr Pushkin. The opera was composed in 1899–1900 to coincide with Pushkin’s centenary, and was first performed in 1900 inMoscow, Russia.

The lengthy full title of both the opera and the poem is The Tale of Tsar Saltan, of his Son the Renowned and Mighty Bogatyr Prince Gvidon Saltanovich and of the Beautiful Princess-Swan.

Note: The name “Saltan” is often erroneously rendered “Sultan”. Likewise, another mistranslation of the Russian title found in English makes this a “legend” rather than simply a “tale” or “fairytale”.

(Russian: Николай Андреевич Римский-Корсаков; Russian pronunciation: [nʲɪkəˌlaj ˌrʲim.skʲɪj ˈkorsəkəf]; 18 March [O.S. 6 March] 1844^{[a 1]} – 21 June [O.S. 8 June] 1908) was a Russian composer, and a member of the group of composers known as The Five.^{[a 2]} He was a master of orchestration. His best-known orchestral compositions—Capriccio Espagnol, the Russian Easter Festival Overture, and the symphonic suite Scheherazade—are staples of the classical music repertoire, along with suites and excerpts from some of his 15 operas.Scheherazade is an example of his frequent use of fairy tale and folk subjects.

 

Rimsky-Korsakov believed, as did fellow composer Mily Balakirev and critic Vladimir Stasov, in developing a nationalistic style of classical music. This style employed Russian folk song and lore along with exotic harmonic, melodic and rhythmic elements in a practice known as musical orientalism, and eschewed traditional Western compositional methods. However, Rimsky-Korsakov appreciated Western musical techniques after he became a professor of musical composition, harmony and orchestration at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1871. He undertook a rigorous three-year program of self-education and became a master of Western methods, incorporating them alongside the influences of Mikhail Glinka and fellow members of The Five. While Valentina Lisitsa was busy in the UK with promotion for Rachmaninov, there were some problems with bad weather so her Eurostar train back to Paris had to be cancelled and she ended up stuck at St Pancras International for some time! However, the delay did not deter her from taking to one of the station’s Street Pianos and performing for passers-by in the station!

The first movement revolves around a diatonic melody that soon develops into complex pianistic figuration. The second theme opens with quiet exchanges between the orchestra and the piano before fully diving into a slower theme in a major key. The first part of the first theme is restated before the movement is pulled into a loud development section which opens with toccata like quavers in the piano and reaches a loud chordal section. The whole development exhibits features similar to a canon, such as an eighth note passage in the piano in which the left hand and the right hand play overlapping figures. The movement reaches a number of ferocious climaxes, especially in the cadenza. Rachmaninoff wrote two versions of this cadenza: the chordal original, which is commonly notated as the ossia, and a second one with a lighter, toccata-like style. Both cadenzas lead into a quiet solo section including the flute, clarinet and horn accompanied by delicate arpeggios in the piano. The piano then restates the first theme in its entirety and closes with a tutti, silent, rippling coda reminiscent of the second theme.

No, it should never be called a “recording session“. What recording sessions are usually about is being extra cautious, hitting all the right notes at the right time, clean, clinical 🙂 Since it was a self-funded “enterprise” operating on a shoestring budget , I could afford a little tiny bit more risk ;  -) Nothing to lose other than a house ( and thank you, friendly bank, for letting me borrow money against my house ). After such a decision playing Rach #3 is not really scary 🙂 Particularly with great London Symphony Orchestra, arguably the one of the very best on this planet. And with equally brave brilliant maestro Michael Francis – who at that time was “doubling” as a double-bass player at LSO , now heading skywards with a major conducting career:-)
