Trained Honeybees Could Lead the Way to Land Mines
Wars may end, but the dangers they pose to civilian populations can persist for generations. In the nearly two decades since the Balkan wars were brought to a close,land mines left over from the conflict have taken the lives of 316 people in Croatia. Of them, 66 were engaging in the painstaking and dangerous process of demining. Now, researchers there are turning to honeybees, which have an incredibly keen sense of smell, in the hope that they can be trained to seek out unexploded land mines with greater accuracy and less risk of inadvertent detonation than current techniques.
