news: Measles Virus Used to Wipe Out Cancer (multiple myeloma)

Measles Virus Used to Wipe Out Cancer

Researchers are cautiously optimistic about an experimental cancer treatment that uses a modified measles virus to target and kill cancerous cells. Two out of six multiple myeloma patients who were treated with extremely high doses of the engineered viruses responded to the treatment, with one appearing to enter into complete remission. These two patients were found to have few or no circulating measles antibodies, important because this affords the virus a chance to attack the cancer cells before the patient’s immune system begins fighting off the virus. NEWS: MEASLES CASES ON THE RISE IN THE US

Measles Cases on the Rise in the US

Public vaccination initiatives in the US—like the Vaccines for Children program, which provides freevaccinations to low-income children—have prevented some 323 million illnesses, 21 million hospitalizations, and 732,000 deaths among those born during the past 20 years. Vaccines for Children was established in 1994 as a direct response to a nationwide measles resurgence that caused tens of thousands of illnesses and over 100 deaths; yet, as the organization approaches its 20th anniversary, the very disease it was meant to stamp out is seeing yet another resurgence. In just the first four months of this year, 129 measles cases were reported, a number greater than any similar period since 1996. More… Discuss

MEASLES-LIKE VIRUS LIKELY BEHIND DOLPHIN DEATHS

Measles-Like Virus Likely Behind Dolphin Deaths

Scientists believe they have finally figured out what is causing the extensive dolphin die-off along the US east coast: a measles-like virus. In the past two months, more than 300 bottlenose dolphins have washed up dead or dying on beaches stretching from New York to North Carolina, about 10 times the average for this period. An outbreak of cetacean morbillivirus, which suppresses the immune system and leaves those affected vulnerable to other diseases, is thought to be responsible for the “unusual mortality event,” as it has been designated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric AdministrationMore… Discuss
