Robben Island is a mile-wide island off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. Stone-age people lived there thousands of years ago when sea levels were lower and the area was easily accessible. Starting in the late 17th century, the island was used to isolate lepers and, later, political prisoners such as Nelson Mandela, who was held there from 1964 to 1982. Nelson Mandela Is Freed (1990)

As a young man, Mandela was an active opponent of South Africa’s apartheid regime. Initially committed to non-violent struggle, he became the leader of the armed wing of the African National Congress after the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre, when police opened fire on several thousand protesters. He was sentenced to life in prison in 1964, but international pressure led to his release in 1990. The last state president of South Africa, de Klerk served from 1989 to 1994. He is best known for engineering the end of apartheid, South Africa’s racial segregation policy, and beginning the process of drafting of a new constitution for the country based on the principle of “one person, one vote.” As president, de Klerk moved quickly to free political prisoners, and, in 1991, he obtained the repeal of all remaining apartheid laws. World Mourns Passing of Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela, the iconic South African statesman who transformed his nation, has died at home at the age of 95. As a young man, Mandela was an active opponent of South Africa’s apartheid regime. He spent 27 years in prison for his antiapartheid activities before South African leaders bowed to international pressure and released him in 1990. Rather than abandon his activism, Mandela immediately returned to politics and spearheaded thecampaign to abolish apartheid in South Africa and transition it to nonracial democracy. His actions earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and the presidency of South Africa one year later, when the country held its first multiracial elections.
