UK Physicians Commonly Prescribe Placebos

Placebos are apparently commonplace in the practice of medicine. A poll of general practitioners in the UK reveals that nearly all have, at one time or another, recommended a placebo pill or treatment to a patient, and three-quarters regularly do so. Though the practice can benefit some patients, as the simple expectation of improvement may be enough to make them feel better, not all placebos are inert. For example, many of those surveyed said they have prescribedantibiotics—which can cause a number of side effects—to patients with suspected viralinfections.
